TOLEDO BEND BI-STATE ALLIANCE MEETING MARCH 25, 2002
The meeting was called to order by Larry Kelly.
J.B. Meyers lead the group in the opening prayer.
Joe Goodson asked members and visitors in attendance to introduce themselves. Mr. Will Smith, Democratic candidate for Sabine County Commissioner, Pct. 4, was among the visitors.
J.B. Meyers was asked to introduce the special guest speaker, Texas State Representative Wayne Christian of Center, Texas.
Representative Christian talked to the group regarding economic development, tourism, and redistricting, noting that redistricting creates the problem of the city versus the rural areas. He stated that seniority is the only thing that helps the rural areas, and that makes "term limits" a bad thing. He told the group Rural Economic Development has been moved to the Agri Department, where he can better serve the rural areas. Representative Christian entertained questions from the group regarding ways in which he might help efforts of the TBBSA. TBBSA members asked that he help get word to the communities about the value of the lake for recreation and tourism, as well as power production. Further Rep. Christian was asked to make sure that the community was made aware that the reservoir was built for three purposes; Water Conservation, Power Generation and Recreation, not just for power generation as he has stated in some of his previous radio programs. Representative Christian promised to do whatever he can within his scope or capability. Larry Kelly said he would make sure Rep. Christian is kept informed of the TBBSA goals and efforts.
