| This is a really nice place to visit just to be there. Have a picnic; throw in a line and do some fishing. Given the water and proximity of trees, of course it's a good place to see a veriety of birds, too. |

RRBT Site 34 - Russell B. Long Lock & Dam
This site is located on the Red River, South of Shreveport, LA and East-South-East from Mansfield, LA.
Directions: From Lake End (Junction Highway 1 and 174): Go North on Highway 1 for 0.3 mile to Porters Island Road. Turn East on Porters Island Road, proceed 2.9 miles to lock/dam.
In the early spring this area has a large group of white pelicans that stay here (nesting?). Additionally, on Porters Island Road there are groups of ducks and other waterfowl to be found.
Louisiana Highway 1, over a distance of about 6 miles to the North of Lake End and about 12 miles to the South (nearly to Natchitoches) has a large number of various species of hawks to be seen just driving up and down the road. Additionally, in the south part, the flooded fields (rice?) have groups of various species of ducks.

| The lock and dam area attracts a number of fishermen year round. It's always a nice area to visit with a huge parking lot, modern restroom facilities, and a number of picnic shelters. Walk out part way to the generating station with a telephoto lens to get excellent shots of the birds on the water and flying to/from it!
