Sabine County courthouse - Hemphill TexasThe Sabine County Courthouse, completed around 1910, is one of East Texas' best known landmarks.

Recently the courthouse was completely refurbished. Probably the highlight of the whole restoration project was the installation of a county seal. The seal is inlaid in the floor at the main entrance. Designed by local craftsman Joe Boudreaux, the circular seal enclosing a star is composed of:

  • 254 pieces of tile to represent the state's 254 counties
  • 28 pieces of tile in the white star representing Texas as the 28th state
  • 23 small blue stars highlighting Sabine County as one of the 23 original precincts, or counties.
  • Under the center of the star is a small time capsule topped with a new 1999 silver dollar
