Hemphill Courthouse Square - Old Cedar Tree Domino PlayersMen have been playing Dominos under the Cedar Tree on the Hemphill Square since the 1900's. When we asked the "oldest" player how it got started, he said "Was working in cotton field, got hot, got under the tree, started playing, been here ever since."

Then we asked if we could take his photo and he said "No, my wife thinks I'm working !".

Hemphill Courthouse Square - Old Cedar Tree Domino PlayersThe Cedar Tree is a landmark in Hemphill and almost sacred to the folks in this area. Every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving we have a huge "Lighting of the Tree" ceremony. We light-up the rest of the Town Square too, but the Cedar Tree is always the brightest.

Sadly, the corner of Courthouse Square is now empty... with only a picnic table and the Old Cedar Tree remaining.
