Anglers Choice - Father-Son Team Take Lake Livingston Tournament
By Len Fairbanks

Saturday, April 8, 2000 - Waterwood Marina, Lake Livingston, TX

A strong spring cold front blew thru the Lake Livingston Area Friday nite packing severe thunderstorms producing high winds, hail, heavy rain and lots of lightning. The only thing left over from the front at blast-off time Saturday morning were the high winds. The 20-30 mph sustained north winds with some gusts even higher prompted Anglers Choice Tournament Director Randy Knight to allow the 65 teams gathered for the Lake Livingston tournament of the Anglers Choice East TX Amateur Team Series to trailer their boats and put out at the ramp of their choice. The boat ramp at Waterwood National Resort and Country Club is well protected from any wind but the whitecaps at the mouth of Pooles Creek would have made it not only difficult but dangerous for anglers to be required to leave and return to the weigh-in site by water. High barometric pressure and blue-bird skies and the constant wind slowed the bassin' down somewhat, but the anglers still brought 115 bass to the scales weighing a total of 252.92 lbs for a healthy 2.20 lb. average.

1st-5 bass/14.36 lbs-The salty father/son team of Jimmy and Todd Castledine brought their best 5 to the scales from somewhere south of Highway 190. Their bag included the 2nd place big bass of the tournament at 4.98 lbs which John was able to fool on a Rat-L-Trap. Spinnerbaits and soft plastics produced the remainder of their catch. John and Todd will be fishing tomorrow in Angler's Choice East Texas Team Tournament and were hesitant to be specific. Stealth/Yamaha braved the waves for this team while they fished All Star Rods with Shimano Reels spooled with 20# Trilene Big Game line. Team Castledine will have to figure out how to divide the 1st place check of $950. Dad's Rat-L-Trap bass earned an extra $200 on top of that.

2nd-5 bass/13.34 lbs-The Livingston, Texas team of Larry Jenkins and Dale Hill put their Ranger/Yamaha in the familiar waters of Kickapoo Creek where they used Abu Garcia reels on All Star Rods to throw baby bass colored Flukes, char./white spinnerbaits and black /blue jigs to fool 10 keepers on the day. "We caught 3 of the ones that we weighed in today off the beds while sight fishing," shared Jenkins, "they couldn't resist that black and blue jig, forever." The 2nd place team took home $725 for their efforts.

3rd-5 bass/12.50 lbs- Randy Hillhouse of Coldspring & Robert Hogue of Huntsville, ran their Ranger/Yamaha rig someplace on the north end (more of the "tournament tomorrow" lockjaw) where they fished with Abu Garcia Reels mounted on Falcon Rods for their limit. Randy wanted to give a special thanks to Robert Richards of R&M Tackle up at Trinity for his support. BIG waves prevented this always tough Lake Livingston team from fishing their favorite water in the Cape Royal area, so they just had to make do up north. 3rd place paid $525.

Overall Big Bass-4.99 lbs-Mark Norris let partner Bobby Bradbury net the overall big bass of the day. His fish bit a slow-rolled 1/2 oz. chartuese/white Stanley Wedge spinnerbait with willow/colorado tandem blades in the Palmetto Creek area of the lake about 7:30 am. Mark's big bite was good for $325.
