5 Bass/15.73 lbs. Take Lake Livingston Tournament
By Len Fairbanks

Anglers Choice East TX Team Series-2000

Saturday, June 11, 2000 - Waterwood Marina, Lake Livingston, TX

With the remnants of a tropical storm producing heavy rain, high winds and lightning, the 49 teams of Anglers Choice East Texas Team Series-2000 spent a tough Sunday on the water. The anglers came in with stories of catching numerous short fish which gives an indication that Lake Livingston is already seeing the benefits of the increased vegetative growth that is taking place from one end of the lake to the other. Even though the lake was about a foot high from recent rainfall and extremely muddy in places, the anglers still brought 10 limits to the scales and a total of 113 bass to the scales weighing 245.00 lbs. for a healthy 2.17 lb. average.

1st-5 bass/15.73 lbs.-The Kickapoo Bait & Tackle Team of Scott David and Gene Swann put a limit in their BassCat/Mercury rig by 9 am but culled 2 of those at 1 pm on the way to their East Texas Team win. "We went to the Kickapoo Creek area fairly early, but we had 4 keepers in the boat before we got there," stated David. "We caught 'em on chart./blue back Deep Baby N's, watermelon red flake Brush Hogs, 3/8 oz. white spinnerbait w/ dbl. White willowleaf blades and our best fish came on a junebug worm. Caught probably 13 fish total and everything came off of wood in about 4' of water." First place paid $1445, while 2nd place big bass paid $190 for a grand total of $1635. Not bad for a rainy Sunday on the lake. Gene Swann did want everyone to know that all of the baits that they used are available at Kickapoo Bait & Tackle.

2nd-5 bass/15.68 lbs-The team of Ricky Potts and Larry Burghart finished barely more than one-half of an ounce behind Swann & David. They ran their Nitro/Mercury down near the dam where they used Shimano reels on Castaway rods spooled with 20# P-line to throw Texas rigged watermelon Zoom lizards with 3/16 oz. weights around 5'-6' deep boat docks. "We caught probably 25 fish total but only 8 keepers," shared Potts. "We figured out that the bigger fish were coming of the ends of the docks in the deeper water. Just about everything came on the lizards, but we caught the big fish on a 1/2 oz. white/char. Terminator spinnerbait with combo colorado/willow leaf blades." The 2nd place team took home $720 for their finish plus $300 for 1st place big bass for a total payout of $1020.

3rd-5 bass/12.64 lbs - John May & Richard Tatsch ran their Cobra/Mercury rig to the mid-lake area where they fished with Daiwa reels mounted on Castaway rods for their limit. "We fished a fairly new shallow Norman crankbait called the "Wake" and pitched a 1 / 2 oz. black/brown/amber jig around shallow grass," stated Tatsch. "We caught around 20 fish total and about 15 keepers today, but couldn't get a big bite." 3rd place paid $635.
