Anglers Choice East TX Amateur Team Series-2000

Saturday, June 10, 2000 - Waterwood Marina, Lake Livingston, TX

Cloudy, rainy conditions greeted the 61 teams gathered for the Lake Livingston tournament of the Anglers Choice East TX Amateur Team Series as they launched their boats into the calm waters of Pooles Creek from the boat ramp at scenic Waterwood National Resort and Country Club. Heavy rainfall in the area left Lake Livingston about one foot high and the Trinity River in the upper end of the lake was extremely muddy. The upper end of the lake usually can be counted on to produce some heavy limits, but on this day, the midlake and southlake areas would dominate the leader board. Even with the high, muddy water and lack of sunshine, the anglers still brought 123 bass to the scales weighing a total of 252.02 lbs for a healthy 2.05 lb. average.

1st-5 bass/11.56 lbs-The always competitive husband/wife team of Donnie and Juanita Robinson brought their best 5 from the south end of Lake Livingston. "We went almost to the dam and fished our way back," shared a windblown Juanita. "We caught probably 15 fish total and 8 keepers. Just about everything came on a firetiger Bomber 6A crankbait or a 1/2 oz. white spinnerbait. We culled 2 of our limit with spinnerbait fish not too long before weigh-in. Usually the bass on Livingston seem to bite better when the sun is out, but when the sun finally came out this afternoon, the bite seemed to slow down." Donnie and Juanita got there in their Skeeter/Yamaha rig and used Shimano reels on American Rodsmith rods to boat their catch. Team Robinson took home a check for $ 900 for their efforts.

2nd-5 bass/11.31 lbs - Sam Creel came up from Beaumont and fished as a one man team to nail down second place. Sam had gotten on some fish in the Kickapoo Creek area fishing a small firetiger crankbait and a Carolina rigged watermelon Fluke and caught enough to place 3rd at the B.A.S.S. Federation the week before. In fact Sam would have won 1st but 3 dead fish bumped him down. Figuring that the fish would stay in the same area, Sam decided to come back up try 'em again. He used a Stratos/Evinrude rig to get himself up to Kickapoo and used Shimano reels spooled with Triple Fish line on Castaway and All Star rods to put 'em in the boat. Sam took home a check for $700 and didn't even have to split it with anybody.

3rd-5 bass/11.11 lbs - Stephen Rhodes and Jim Gaard caught fish on buzzbaits and firetiger crankbaits and their 3 best fish came on Texas rigged junebug Zoom U-tail worms. The deeper docks seemed to be a key for their better fish. Rhodes & Gaard filled their limit at about 2:30 pm and were able to cull 2 after that. They used their Champion/Mercury rig to run to the Kickapoo/Penwaugh area where they fished with Abu Garcia reels filled with Trilene and P-line mounted on Castaway rods. 3rd place paid $510.

4th-5 bass/10.92 lbs - The Dusty Rhodes Marine Team of Henry Parsons and Mike Curry ran their Champion/Mercury rig to some southlake boat houses where they flipped and pitched their way to 4 th place. "We caught around 50 fish today, but only 8 keepers," stated Parsons. "When all those little fish grow up, the fishing on this lake ought to be fantastic. We had our limit by about 11, but we couldn't catch any cull fish. Most of our fish came on Texas-rigged junebug Zoom U-tail worms with 3/16 oz. weights, but some hit a 1/4 oz. chart./white Terminator spinnerbait. There was one floating dock in area we were fishing and we didn't catch any fish off of it, but just about all the ones with pilings produced fish for us." Parsons & Curry fished with Shimano reels filled with 15# Trilene Big Game mounted on Falcon and Castaway rods. 4 th place paid $435.
