Anglers Choice East TX Couples Series-2000

Saturday, June 25, 2000 - Waterwood Marina, Lake Livingston, TX

Hot temperatures and hot fishing were the big story at this weekend's Anglers Choice East Texas Couples tournament on Lake Livingston out of scenic Waterwood Marina. Recent heavy rains in the Trinity River watershed above Lake Livingston left the upper end of the lake and the main river channel extremely muddy. Even these adverse conditions couldn't slow the bass fishing down. Even though only 3 limits were weighed in, most of the 39 couples reported catching numerous short fish. The numbers of non-keepers and the ample forage base, in the form of huge schools of shad, certainly indicates that good things are on the horizon for the bass fishing on Lake Livingston. Almost all of the little bass were reported to be butterball fat and with appetites like that, they won't stay under 14" for long. The recent increase in shoreline vegetation is beginning to show some dividends.

1st-5 bass/13.70 lbs. - Nick Albus, braving the heat without wife Sharon, ran his Skeeter/Mercury rig to various points on the north end of the lake where he used Abu Garcia reels mounted on Bass Pro rods to fool his catch. "I caught probably 18 bass today with 9 of those being keepers", stated Albus. "One of the fish that I weighed in came on a Texas rigged black neon worm with a 1/4 oz. weight. The other 4 bit a 1/2 oz. black/blue jig with a 5" Hawg Craw trailer. I caught every fish today flippin' to wood in 3' to 5' of water." Nick wanted to be sure and thank his primary sponsor, Miller Distributing of Trinity.

2nd-5 bass/9.92 lbs - Ronnie & Brenda Bates ran their Boots Follmar Skeeter/Yamaha rig to some boat docks south of Cape Royale where they used Quantum reels filled with Berkley Big Game mounted on Kistler rods to corral their limit. "The first 4 fish that we caught today were keepers, but it was 12:30 till we caught keeper No. 5 and that was it," shared Ronnie. "We caught close to 20 fish today, but only those 5 keepers. Everything today came from boat docks in between 6 and 8 feet of water. It didn't seem to matter whether or not the dock had any brush, I think those fish were looking for shade more than anything. Brenda caught some of her fish on a small char./blue back crankbait and I caught most of mine on a Texas-rigged watermelon centipede with the tail dipped chartruese."

3rd-5 bass/9.42 lbs - The Onalaska couple of Ronnie & Diana Taylor stayed close to home and spent their day in Kickapoo Creek. "We caught between 20 and 25 bass today with 7 or 8 of those being keepers," admitted Ronnie. "Diana caught a few fish on a small firetiger crankbait and the rest of our fish came on a Texas-rigged, bluegill colored Baby Brush Hog with a 1/4 oz. weight. We had our limit at 12 noon and managed to cull twice, but just couldn't catch a big 'un."
