Fishing and Outdoor Adventures

So, where can I take the kids fishing on a budget? If you are like most parents and are on a budget, this question deserves an answer!

There are several options for non-boaters. Catfish ponds are a good option, you just need to find a reputable one. Most catfish ponds have bait, rods, reels and tackle available on site. This is a great help to those who don't have their own tackle. These ponds are "catch all you want" but you keep what you catch. You pay by the pound for each fish you catch. Sometimes it is really hard to get a young angler who's catching fish to stop while the fish are biting, so be prepared! My recommendation is you set a limit of fish before you go to keep it within your budget and discuss this with your young angler.

Another good option is fishing local public rivers and lakes. Most city park lakes are available to fish, but be sure to check the regulations before you venture out for a fine day of fishing. When fishing these areas, I recommend light line and tackle. Blakemore Roadrunners work great, as do small grubs and worms. During the heat of summer a tube of crickets will have your little ones reeling 'em in!

Wherever you decide to fish, please check the Texas Parks & Wildlife regulations for minimum length and legal limits. Check local regulations as well. Be considerate and make sure you aren't on someone's private property. There are a lot of land owners with river access and stock ponds, be sure to obtain their permission before attempting to fish.

Keep in mind a kid wants action. If you take them fishing, make it an enjoyable trip. Take plenty of sun screen, snacks and drinks and don't forget the bait. When the fish stop biting, it is time to go. If they have a good experience, they will want to go again and again. Get your kid hooked on fishing, not on drugs! Good luck!
