Dr. Sheltons Fishing Adventure - March 25, 2000
By Jeff Buchanan

Jackson Hill Marina on Lake Sam Rayburn was the host of this great tournament for a great cause. A day when God's sunshine beams down on a bunch of fisherman, fishing for much more than bragging rights. A chance to help someone that needs it. Thanks for your support in this very important effort.

"This is the 7th year we've held this event and I look forward to it being the biggest yet for the tournament," said William B. Shelton, Jr., M.D., namesake of the tournament and former medical director of the Arthur Temple, Sr. Regional Cancer Center at Memorial Health System of East Texas. Dr. Shelton recently retired after practicing radiation oncology in Lufkin for over 30 years. "The money we raise through this tournament does so much good for so many people. It truly is a fun way to help cancer patients in our area."

Well, the weather was just what the doctor ordered with beautiful weather for both the fishing spectator and the fisherman. Lots of fish were caught for a great cause. The best producing baits were Carolina rigged lizards, soft jerkbaits, and spinnerbaits. The fish were shallow and easy to catch, claimed most anglers. But there were only a few that had the chance take home the money.

The entry fee for the tournament was $150.00 per team with $30.00 going as a voluntary donation to the Arthur Temple, Sr. Regional Cancer Center. All Proceeds from the tournament will be used for patients of the Arthur Temple Sr., Regional Cancer Center who need pain medications and medical aids that Medicaid or Medicare do not provide. The donations will also help provide patient transportation to and from the Center. The Center serves a 13-county region and is one of the most advanced facilities of its type in Texas. The Center's location makes it possible for patients to receive quality treatment in Deep East Texas without having to drive to Houston or a nearby larger city.
