Of Bass and Gals
By Sue Crochet

There are a number of lady anglers throughout our country who are not able or haven't had the chance to fish in a national circuit. However, they have all the skills, knowledge, and ability as those that label themselves as "Pros". In recognition of their achievements and contributions to the sport of bass fishing, my plans are to profile some of the ladies from the Southwest Louisiana and East Texas areas from time to time. I hope you enjoy these profiles and will write to me at the e-mail address below with any comments or suggestions you might have.

This month, I'd like to introduce you to Mary Jane Granger ... wife, mother, and full time employee of McKenzie Pest Control in Lake Charles. She was born and raised in Cameron Parish (south of Lake Charles) and has lived there entire life. This area of Louisiana is rich with every type of fishing imaginable ... rivers, marshlands, bayous, and lakes that offer both saltwater and freshwater fishing. "In those days", Mary Jane says, "we fished for anything and everything."

When she and her husband, Jeff, met and married, he began to teach her how to refine her skills as a bass angler. This is when she began to fish in large reservoirs such as Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn. Since that time, Mary Jane's love of this sport has developed into a passion that has taken her to various parts of the country. She is a tough competitor and has gained the admiration and respect of fellow anglers ... both male and female.

Mary Jane began fishing the national Bass 'N Gal tour in 1993 and from there, became involved in various other circuits such as Anglers Choice Couples and Amateur Team, and the East Texas Bass Trails. She is also a member of several local clubs in which she has done quite well. Finally, she is the Treasurer for the first-ever ladies bass club in the Lake Charles area, the Lake Area Lady Anglers.

Mary Jane's sponsors include Lake Charles Yamaha (Skeeter Boats & Yamaha Motors), Kistler Rods, Triple Fish fishing line, and Kipp's Lures. Because of her achievements and high visibility as a bass angler, she has recently earned the honor of becoming a member of the Skeeter Team. Her more outstanding accomplishments over the last few years include 1998 Anglers Choice E. Texas Couples Anglers of the Year, Lake Area Lady Anglers 1998 Angler of the Year, and placed 3rd in the 1999 Anglers Choice Amateur Team Tournament of Champions.

Always willing to help and share information with fellow club members, she has earned the respect deserving of a true professional. As President of the Lake Area Lady Anglers and on behalf of the entire membership, it gives me great pleasure to say that she is an asset we just couldn't do without!

Until next month, good fishin' and God bless.

Mary Jane
