By Ed Snyder

1st Annual Huntsman Cancer Institute Bass Classic
Saturday, May 27, 2000, Frontier Park Marina, Lake Toledo Bend, TX.

"We left the bigger one in the lake, answered the leading team which had just weighed-in a 5 bass/14.64 lb catch, groaning as to how a solid 6 pound bass busted loose just before they had to come in for their 4:pm flight deadline. The leading team fished among 288 other anglers who were fishing for a good cause as their entry fees helped to raise $10,000 for Cancer Research.

"HOPE" is our main purpose for this tournament, stated tournament director, E.J. Moore, "as it stands for "Huntsman-Organization-People-and-Employees" which are dedicated to the research & development for the "cure" of cancer. "Our first tournament event being held at Lake Toledo Bend's Frontier Park Marina on Memorial Day weekend, managed to draw 144 teams who are fishing for a 5 bass/14" minimum length Largemouth or Kentucky bass daily limits, "and" the team who can weigh-in the heaviest "overall" two day bass weight will win the 1st place honors for tomorrow's finish and a chance to take home a winning portion of the $45,000 offered in cash & prizes.

1st place leader-(5 bass/14.64 lbs)- Scooter Clark of Center TX, and Randy Smotherman of Shelbyville TX, fished 1215 area grass-beds while working Falcon/Lews rods and Shimano reels spooled with 20# P-Line rigged with pumpkinseed/chartreuse Zoom sluggo's. "We worked a 1:pm to 3:pm prime-bite that "happened" over 7' to 8' short-grass edges, which hooked 10 bass, putting 9 in our Champion/Mercury bass-rig, busting one off at the boat, a goodun' at about 6 lbs.
