By Ed Snyder

Champion Boats "Tournament of Champions" Millennium Tour.
Sunday, October 22, 2000, Cypress Bend Resort, Toledo Bend Lake, LA.

With 476 anglers from a 13 state wide area teaming up to fish Toledo Bends "Millennium" Tournament of Champions the expectations were very high for some really heavy tournament sacks, and after the first day weigh-in of 5 bass/23.06 lbs was tallied up by the Texas team of Lance Hughes and James Elliot, anchoring their first day lead with a 7.08 lb "kicker", the expectations suddenly became "extremely-high" with the final day leader-board marking multiple 30 lb sacks all the way down to 9 th place.

Cool weather and choppy winds greeted the final day anglers as they launched into Toledo Bend waters to finish up their two day long tournament. But despite changing weather patterns the over-casting skies and gusty breezes allowed for plenty of bass-bites. One Texas team, who managed to put a 5 bass/18.64 lb catch on the first day leader-board for a 4th place lead, returned on the final day with a 5 bass/22.48 lb finish, giving them a 10 bass/40.82 lb overall and the first place braggin-rights to the "Millennium" Tournament of Champions.

1st place team-(40.82 -lbs )-Randy Qualls of Streetman TX, and Mike Metcalf of Center TX, put their winning stringer together while working Berkley rods and Daiwa reels spooled with 20 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. The Texas team fished Northlake "bank shallow" to 12' river channel drop-offs with 3/4 oz black/blue/amber Stanley jigs with TX smoke Lake Fork Tackle pig-claws to catch 12 bass both days from a scattered all day bite.

2nd place team-(39.39 -lbs )- Lance Hughes and James Elliot of Center TX, worked Shimano rods and reels spooled with 20 lb test Berkley Big Game mono attached to shad colored DD-22's and Carolina rigged camo Zoom lizards. The East Texas team fished mid-lake slough-drops from 5' to 8' to catch 3 limits on day-1 and two limits on day-2 for their 2nd place finish of 10 bass/39.39 lbs.

3rd place team-(38.92 -lbs )-Stan Burgay of Timpson TX, and Mark Herron of Alexandria LA, fished Carolina rigged watermelon/chartreuse Zoom lizards and TX rigged camo 10" Larew worms around Beson short-grass ridge-line edges that dropped off from 6' to 10'. The Longview Marine Pro/Team worked Shimano rods and reels spooled with 20 lb test Berkley Big Game mono for catching their 3rd place finish from an all day bite for both days with their bigger bass coming in on Norman Shad patterned DD-22's.

Overall Big Bass-( 7.23 -lbs)- Steve Thiel of Austin TX, was fishing with Allan Luedtke of College Station TX, when he nailed a 7.23 lb bass from a 12' to 15' McGee Flats outside grass edge with a 3 / 4 oz Oldham golden/shiner -(brown)- spinner-bait. The big bass hit on an 8:am bite which put $2,875 in Theil's pocket.
