Gunnels and Newberry rack up another win at Anglers Choice East Texas Team Tourny on Lake Livingston

Sunday March3,2001 Waterwood Resort-Lake Livingston

Bluebird skies and stiff north winds greeted the 47 teams of anglers that have been watching the ever-changing fishing conditions here on Lake Livingston.Earlier in the week warm temps and bedding fish were prevalent around the lake. Then the influx of water coming down the Trinity river from the recent Dallas floods started raising the lake levels. This started moving the fish off the beds and then the rains came for a solid three days bringing cooling temps and a lake level 2 ft over normal levels and rising. This would prove to be a "tuff" tournament and these conditions would level the playing field among the local and "otta towners" anglers.

Randy Knight, tournmant director for Anglers Choice East Texas team apprised the situation and advised all angler to play it safe since there was a lot of floating debris in the lake and let the anglers trailer to their preferred locations.

With the full sun warming the shallows again, anglers headed back to the shore lines and brush. Not many anglers found there prey willing to play. Only 4 teams would be lucky enough to entice a limit into their live wells. Yesterday John Gunnels came out to Lake Livingston to pre-fish for him and his partner Dicky Newberry. It proved to be a worthwhile trip. Partner Dicky had spent the last three days on Sam Rayburn fishing hard in the Texas Bassmasters tournament then turned around and met up with partner John to fish Lake Livingston."We covered a lot of territory just flippin' the brush and against the banks with lizards"commented Dicky. It paid off very nice with a limit of fish weighing 19.67 lbs and and 2nd big bass of 5.64lbs to take home a total of over $1600.

2nd place team of Donnie and Juanita Robinson found their fish again today as they did yesterday when they won the Amateur tournament. Fishing up Kickapoo creek flipping tubes and lizards against the banks they happily weighed in 15.87 lbs and Donnie was able to bring in big bass at 7.28lbs.
