By Ed Snyder

Bass-N-Bucks East Texas -2001- Team Circuit
Sunday- December 3, 2000- Twin Dikes Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

BRRrrrisk Arctic winds "WINTERIZED" the opening day of the Bass-N-Bucks E/TX Team season with minus-zero degree wind-chills and choppy ice-capping swells as 515 anglers teamed up to launch into Lake Sam Rayburn to try and unlock a winning bass pattern from the icy grip of Olde Man Winter. This would be one of the "TUFF" ones as Tournament Director, David Concienne weighed-in very few limits with most anglers bagging only 2 or 3 fish per team.

"This is our first event of the 2001 season, explained David Concienne, "And this years Bass-N-Buck team format offers over $460,000 in cash & prizes, "Which includes a $42,000 package guarantee per tournament event. "This years events will also have a Skeeter/Yamaha Boat Owners "Bonus Money" format which involves $1,000 -mega-buck- payouts for those Skeeter/Yamaha teams who fish, compete, and win in our circuit. "Our end of season Championship this year, Concienne advised, "Will have an $85,000 -PLUS- guarantee which will be held in September of 2001on Toledo Bend Lake, LA.

Post-front bluebirds anchored by high-pressure arctic winds made for some really "tuff" bassin' on Lake Sam Rayburn today with most anglers struggling just to catch a 5 bass limit. The word was out that it would take at least a 7 or 8 lb kicker to win this event, and this guesstimate proved to be "right-on" as the winning team managed to only catch 4 bass, but with one weighing in at 7.71 lbs.

1st-place team-(4 bass/16.26 lbs)- Jack Martin and Kent Griffin of Nederland TX, ran their Ranger/Mercury bass-rig to Veach Basin moss-beds to work Shimano/Castaway rods and Garcia reels spooled with 12 lb test Stren "EasyCast mono. The longtime Bass-N-Bucks team managed to catch their four bass weigh-in with Berkley "bluegill" Frenzy lip-less crank-baits between an 8am to 10:am bite. "We didn't catch another bass after that, stated the happy duo as they informed of working 14' moss-edges where Martin nailed the 7.71 lb "kicker" which would anchor their first place win, and the keys to a fully rigged Skeeter/Yamaha bass boat.

2nd-place team-(5 bass/15.04 lbs)- Timpson TX, angler, Stan Burgay teamed up with Center angler, Lance Hughes to work Shimano rods and reels spooled with 20 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. "We put our Champion/Mercury up above the 147 bridge today, Burgay informed as he told of fishing 10' guts with ½ & ¾ oz red and green Rat-L-Traps to catch 3 bass by 7am, and 5 bass between 12:noon and 2pm to land their 2nd place finish from scattered grass-clumps.

3rd-place team-(5 bass/14.37 lbs)- Ken Hayes of Leesville LA, and Kraig Welborn of DeRidder LA, put their Procraft/Mercury up in Buck Bay grass-flats to work Castaway/Shimano rods and Abu-Garcia reels spooled with 50 and 60 lb test Berkley "whiplash" braid. The Louisiana team fished 1 oz camo, gator, and black/blue/amber Oldham jigs with TX smoke craws and black/emerald Zoom super chunks to catch an all day bite that put 9 bass in their cull.
