Bank-Shallow Pattern Traps Rayburn A/C Amateur Win
By Ed Snyder

Anglers Choice East Texas 2001 Amateur Team Series
Saturday, 27, 2001, Twin Dikes Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

"We had four limits by 11:30 am, stated the East Texas Amateur Team which had just digitized a 5 bass/19.02 lb win for a first place finish. The Dibol/Lufkin TX, team competed against a field of 73 boats to wrestle their winning weight from 2' -to- 4' "bank-shallow" waters by "chunking-n-winding" chrome/blue Rat-L-Traps through the Johnson-grass along the creek-channel edges. With the lake almost at its normal full level now with lake waters still chilled from the previous weeks weather of arctic cold fronts and torrential run-offs, the bass seemed to be moving into pre-spawn migration patterns. But today's winning pattern caught everybody by surprise as no one expected the bass to be on "bank-shallow" patterns. As one chilled to the bone angler put it, "Man, when ya think ya gottem figured out, "whammo" they'll fool ya again!! fewer words could have said it better.

1st place team-(5 bass/19.02 lbs)- Clay McElveen of Dibol TX, and Tommy Stovall of Lufkin TX, put their Ranger/Mercury up a creek near the 147 bridge to work Allstar rods and Shimano/Garcia reels spooled with 16 lb test P-line. They concentrated on fishing "bank-shallow" 2' -to- 4' creek-channel edges which had buck brush carpeted with dead Johnson grass. "We just kept chunkin'-n-windin' with 3/4 oz chrome/blue Rat-L-Traps, stated the winning team, telling that they had an idea that the bass were holding shallow and just kept moving up the creek until they found the bass. The water temperature in the creek they were fishing was in the 50's which also provided a 6.13 lb "overall" for Tommy Stovall on a 9:am big bite.

2nd place team-(5 bass/18.04 lbs)- Alan Bond and Robert Royal of Vidor TX, put their Skeeter/Yamaha over mid-lake/main-lake structure to fish Falcon rods and Shimano reels spooled with 12 lb test Barkley sensathin mono. "We cranked (n/a) Norman DD-14's and DD-22's over 16' -to- 18' point-drops, stated the 2nd place team, as they told of catching 15 keeper bass between 11:am to 12:noon in 48 degree water.

3rd place team-(5 bass/17.49 lbs)- Jesse Johnson and Milton Willis of Hampshire TX, ran their Nitro/Mercury along some 147 bridge structure to work Shimano rods and reels spooled with 15 lb test Berkley mono. The 3rd place team fished 1/2 oz chartreuse and chrome/blue Rat-L-Traps to catch their bass from 5' -to- 8' grass-beds with bald spots.
