Big "T" Gives Up 5 Bass/20.85 Lbs For Bass-N-Bucks
By Ed Snyder

Skeeter/Yamaha Bass-N-Bucks 2001 East Texas Team Circuit
Sunday, February 4, 2001, Cypress Bend Resort, LA.

Awesome sunshine helped to hide the effects of the high bluebird post-fronts, but the chilled depths of Toledo Bend didn't as the bass-bite became lock-jawed in some of the lake areas, but semi-active in others. But within the fleet of 251 boats that eased out at safelight were plenty of hard-corps bass anglers who were used to fishing a "tuff" bite at this time of year like the 5 bass/22.39 lb and 5 bass/20.85 lb weights which were tallied for winning part of the $42,000 being offered in cash & prizes which included a fully rigged 2001 Skeeter SX190/Yamaha-150 bass boat. But due to a rule misjudgment on the off-water regulations, the 22.39 lb weight had to step aside for the 20.85 lb effort................"OUCH!!"..But rules are rules!

"We're offering over $460,000 in guaranteed payouts for our 2001 season, informed Bass-N-Bucks Ceo/Director, David Concienne, "And we're also providing a guaranteed $85,000 Championship Purse for those anglers who qualify to fish it at Cypress Bend Resort on Toledo Bend Lake in September. "New for this year, Concienne added, "Will be two "open" team events which will be held on Lake Conroe Feb/25 and Lake Fork April/29, as no membership is required to fish those event. "And we have our special Skeeter/Yamaha Bonus Money contingency payouts for our anglers who fish and compete at these events in their Skeeter/Yamaha bass-boats. (See rules & regs for info)- This is our 2nd event for the 2001 season, David advised, "And we're expecting some really big sacks to be weighed-in today.

1st-(5 bass/20.85 lbs)-Clint Boulware and Rick Hollingsworth of Zavala TX, put their Skeeter/Yamaha over north-lake grass-beds to work Kistler rods and Shimano reels spooled with 15 lb test Berkley mono. "We concentrated on fishing 1 oz Arkansas shiner Stanley Big "T" spinner baits on the inside grass-lines. Explained the winning team, "Stating that they had a limit by 8:30am, catching at least 10 bass today.

2nd-(5 bass/20.37 lbs)- "I culled the wrong bass, stated a very unhappy Jimmy Sorter of Hemphill TX, as he informed of how he, and Brian Fox of Pineland TX, ran their Skeeter/Mariner bass-rig to the Pendleton Bridge area for working Allstar/Castaway rods and Garcia reels spooled with 20 lb test Stren and P-line. "We used 3/8 & 1 / 4 -oz Mr Blitz black/chartreuse/green jigs and 5" black/blueflake tubes for flippin 2' to 3' bushes, they explained, further informing of fishing 5' to 7' grass-clumps with 1 / 2 & 3 / 4 oz red and chartreuse Traps to catch their bass on. "But, Jimmy frowned, "I culled the wrong bass which would've given us the 1st place win fer-sure. Jimmy also went on to say that they went to check out his brother's hole due to the fact that his brother didn't think there wouldn't be any bass holding there. "BUT GUESS WHAT BROTHER!

3rd-(Roy Sanford and Gene Colvin of Silsbee TX, ran their Charger/Yamaha bass-rig to Lowe's Creek grass-beds to work Castaway rods and Quantum reels spooled with 15 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. "We fished 1 / 2 -oz white Hildebrandt spinner baits along 8' to 10' inside and outside grass-lines, they informed while telling of catching only 6 bass from an all day bite that culled to their 3 rd place finish.

Overall Big Bass-(7.76 lbs)- Harold Stalcup of Hemphill TX, worked a Shimano rod and reel spooled with 12 lb test triple-fish mono. "I managed to catch my 7.76 lb "kicker" on a crawfish DD-22 while fishing with Mike Mchalec on a inside grass-hump up in Housen Bay at 8:am.
