7TH Annual Louisiana Oilman Tournament
By Darrell Lyons

March 2-3, 2001 San Miguel Park was host to the 7th annual Louisiana Oilman Tournament. 669 teams were greeted by cold fronts, falling rain and rising water. But as with any tournament there will be fish caught, and caught they were. On day one of this 2 day event all of the top five teams broke the 20lb. mark and big bass honors went to Christopher Ortego with his 9.72lb. trophy which came in on a black neon Strike King flippin tube, fished on his All Star/Calcutta combo, spooled with 14lb. Berkley vanish. Christopher caught the fish in 3ft. of water in Palo Gaucho Bayou around buck brush.

On day two the oilman awoke to more rain and light winds. But as the 2 day weights were tallied the tea of Jeffrey Tall and Gail Yohey came out in 1st place with a total weight of 39.72lbs. The team fished the Negreet area with watermelon red wacky worms. The team of Scott Young and Jackie Adshire came in 2nd with a weight of 38.68lbs. Two teams tied for 3rd with 35.76lbs. Donnie Williams and Dean Richmond, and Dwayne Grauovia and Craig Frilot. And in the 5th spot with 35.66lbs. was Sammy Peace and Brad Tilbury. The teams fished for a total purse of $44,750.00 and 3 Champion boats rigged by Nichols Marine of Longview. The tournament weighed in 2,404 fish with a total weight of 6,447.73lbs. A special congratulations goes out to the directors who did a great job organizing the tournament and keeping everything moving without any major hitches. We look forward to seeing you all next year.
