By Ed Snyder

Anglers Choice East Texas 2001East Texas Team Series
Sunday, April 1, 2001, Frontier Park Marina, Lake Toledo Bend TX.

"We started out dragging the inside lines and flipping the bushes just like most everyone else was doing, stated the winning team who had just bested their competitive field with a 5 bass/19.88 lb catch, "Then after catching only two dinks all morning long, they advised, "We decided that being shallow wasn't the thing to be doing so we tied on the heavy stuff and went looking for them!!"

Hard bluebird sunshine and fluctuating lake levels greeted the 80 teamed anglers who signed up to compete at this Anglers Choice event as post-front conditions provided in-active bass bites for the most part, and as Anglers Choice tourney Director Randy Knight began weighing the incoming sacks it quickly became apparent as to just how "tuff" that bite really was!

1st place team-( 5 bass/19.88 lbs ) - Phil Marks and Scott Secules put their Skeeter/Yamaha up in the 1215 mid-lake area for working Browning rods and reels spooled with 20 lb test Stren Super-Tuff. "We started out like most everyone else, stated Marks, "By dragging the inside lines and flipping the flooded brush, "But after only catching a couple of dinks we figured that this wasn't the thing to be doing so we tied on our heavy stuff and went looking for them. "We found our bass holding on deepwater grass-points, Phil advised, "So we began fishing one/oz black/blue Strike King Elite jigs with black/blue Larew craws and started catching the bigger bass from 22' deep grass-points, which put 5 bass in our cull from between an 11am to 2pm prime-bite, which included Phil's 2nd place big bass of 5.19 lbs.

2nd place team-( 5 bass/17.56 lbs )- Jimmy Jeansonne and Wayne Ebarb ran their Cobra/Mercury bass-rig to "far-north" flooded brush to work Fenwick rods and Garcia reels spooled with 80 lb test Spider-Wire. "We concentrated on fishing the 3' to 4' flooded stuff with ½ oz black/green/chartreuse Oldham jigs and junebug Larew craws, Jimmy informed as he also told of fishing Texas rigged black/blue Reaction Bayou Bandits to catch 7 bass from an all day bite, giving Jimmy the 5.87 lb overall big bass for the tournament. "We feel that the spawn is between 60% to 70% finished already, advised Jeansonne, as he further stated that another warming trend should finish the spawn off.

3rd place team-( 5 bass/14.49 lbs ) - Father & son team, Jeff and Bo Connella, eased their Javelin/Johnson bass-rig into the Patroon area to fish G-Loomis rods and Shimano reels spooled with 40 lb test Power Pro braid. "We worked the shallow flooded brush and Cedars with 11/16 oz black/blue/amber CrawGator jigs and black/blue Larew craws, stated the duo as they informed of catching 10 bass from an all day bite.
