By Ed Snyder

Anglers Choice East Texas 2001East Texas Team Series
Sunday, April 29, 2001, Twin Dikes Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

Superb Spring weather conditions set the competitive stage for the Anglers Choice East Texas Team Circuit as 60 teamed anglers launched into Lake Sam Rayburn under clear skies, light southerly breezes, and 80-degree warmth. But with the lake level being pulled down from its previous 10' high-water mark, and with the fish coming off of their post-spawn bass-i-tudes, the outcome for the 3:pm weigh-in at Twin Dikes Marina were to be anything but predictable.

1st place team-(5 bass/18.14 lbs)- Matt Reed of Madisonville TX and Ricky Friedrich of Houston put their Nitro/Mercury over mid-lake inside grass-points to fish Shimano rods and reels spooled with 15 lb test Berkley mono. The winning catch was caught on chrome/blue suspending Rogues and TX rigged watermelon Zoom brush-hogs. The 1st place team didn't have any practice time so they spent their day looking for bass, which seemed to do the trick for them.

2nd place team-(5 bass/16.03 lbs)- Stan Burgay of Timpson and Lance Hughes of Center TX, ran their Champion/Mercury bass-rig over to Veach Basin to work Shimano rods and reels spooled with 20 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. The 2nd place team fished 5' to 6' flooded brush with TX rigged pumpkin/green Strike King tubes to catch 20 bass between 8am to 10am.

3rd place team-(5 bass/15.24 lbs)- Dean Benefield of New Caney and Jeff Kersh of Porter TX, took their Skeeter/Mercury to the 147 bridge area to work Allstar rods and Shimano reels spooled with 12 lb test Stren. The 3rd place team fished 4' to 8' buck-brush with ¼ oz white Stanley spinner-baits with white splitail trailers and pink Zoom flukes to catch their weight.

Overall Big Bass-(6.76 lbs)- Tim Miller of Pasadena and Curtis Kayda of San Leon TX, ran their BassCat/Mercury to mid-lake flooded brush to work Castaway rods and reels spooled with 17 lb test Spider Super-mono. Tim was fishing a Carolina rigged watermelon Zoom lizard along an 8' brush patch when the 6.76 lb bass hit on a 1:pm big bite.
