Get Hooked On Fishing "NOT DRUGS"
By Ed Snyder

East Texas "Get Hooked on Fishing -NOT DRUGS- Crusade
Saturday, May 5, 2001, Shirley Creek Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

Once again, as it has in the past 15 years of operations, the early morning hours at Shirley Creek Marina on Lake Sam Rayburn were filled with the sounds of joyful screams, playful panic, and sheer happiness as over 400 children had fun catching fish-n-stuff, enjoyed eating hotdogs-n-stuff, and learned important lessons about nature-n-stuff. And, as they have in these past 15 years of operations, those children who listened to the importance of "The Message" will become the points of light of our future!

An Open Letter of Thanks;

"Fifteen years ago, stated Paul Hinton, founding father of the East Texas Get Hooked on Fishing Program, "Houston Oiler John Grimsley and I began a fishing conversation about the involvement of drugs in the professional field of sports. "Upset with the news being filled with the drug problems of our sports-world we decided to start speaking at the East Texas schools against these drug abuses. "Joined by NFL Hall of Famer, Kenny Houston, "We began to formulate the East Texas Get Hooked on Fishing program that has seen over 10,700 youth participate in this fishing program with over 22,000 students competing in the class room essay and poster contests. "And as of now, Paul Hinton continued, "To date we have operated throughout the East Texas Area School Districts and have awarded over $310,000 of fishing related products to the children and students of our area. "But today I have sad news, Paul Hinton announced, "Due to health problems I've been advised by my Docter to slow down and get out from under the pressure of this very important program. "Although the Lord has blessed me with good health over these past years I must heed the warning of my Doctor and step down as the Director of the East Texas Program." I have been richly awarded, honored, and humbled these past 15 years with seeing thousands of happy faces from those children who've enjoyed "Fishing Friends & Family Day and by the tremendous response from the teachers, parents, governors, presidents, and first ladies who've sent several hundred letters and cards in support of the East Texas Get Hooked on Fishing Program. "Now I must sadly step down and hand over the East Texas Program to some one else. "My heartfelt THANKS goes out to all of you who've participated and supported this program over the past 15 years and with the help of the Lord we'll see you back here next year.

"May God Bless You All"

Executive Director.........Paul Hinton

From the Governors Office of the State of Texas;

Welcome to the 15th annual East Texas Get Hooked on Fishing -Not Drugs- celebration. This wonderful event provides a great opportunity to relax and enjoy the great outdoors, while re-emphasizing your commitment to staying drug-free.

Young people are the Lone Star States most precious resource. I enthusiastically applaud your commitment to say "no" to drugs. It is a promise of that will help you achieve your goals, and it is a promise of which your state and parents can be proud. I salute the enthusiasts, as well as the winners of the essay and poster contests, for taking a stand against drugs.

Also, I would like to thank everyone who has a role in making this annual event a possibility. Our children are being exposed to the great outdoors and, at the same time, the thrill of competition. Moreover, they are being commended for honoring the values that are the bedrock of a strong society.

Mrs. Perry joins me in sending best wishes for a fun event. Good luck fishing.

Sincerely, Rick Perry.... Governor.
