2nd Annual Huntsman Cancer Institute H.O.P.E. Bass Classic
May 19 & 20, 2001, Cypress Bend Resort, Lake Toledo Bend, LA.

Classic May weather for this classic tournament. Saturday held temps to 90 degrees with a SW wind at 10-15 with gusts to 20. This didn't slow down the 122 teams entered in this event as they competed for a good cause by helping to raise important funds for the research of cancer prevention. By tournament's end the 2nd Annual Huntsman's Championship title belonged to the team of Francis Johnson of Woodville TX, and Francis Pattillo of Lumberton TX, for their 2 day -10 bass total of 29.29 lbs.

The Huntsman Cancer Institute's mission is to understand cancer from its beginnings, to use that knowledge in the creation and improvement of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of cancer patients, and to educate the public about cancer risk, prevention, and care. Jon Huntsman, a cancer survivor himself, has already donated over $250 million dollars toward cancer research in the past 5 years. All of the profits from his company and this tournament went towards cancer research. Their goal is to eradicate cancer. $500 from this tournament was donated to the Toledo Bend Lake Association for re-stocking.

With their Champion/Mercury bass-rig, Kistler/Abu-Garcia combo and their Trilene Big Game 15 lb line, they managed to catch their 1st place win on spooks, Texas rigged watermelon/red worms dipped in chartreuse and fished in 4-7' of grass. They fished the mid lake area and caught fish all day long to cull up their 1st place win worth $1,000.

2nd place team-(10 bass/26.26 lbs)- James Matney and Bobby Menasco moved up from 21st place to finish in 2nd place overall with a total of 26.26 lbs for an $800 payday. Their catch came on watermelon red wacky worms; dipped in chartreuse, black/blue jigs and white/chartreuse 3/4 oz. tandem spinner-baits fishing the flats in Six Mile Creek over 10-12' grass beds. Their first fish was a Gasper-goo, second fish was a striper, and their third was a 20 lb catfish. With all that out of the way they went on to catch their second day total of 14.82 lbs, which anchored their 2nd place win.

3rd place team-(10 bass/26.16 lbs)-Travis Pattillo and Reggie Rivera moved up from 5th place to 3rd place with 26.16 lbs for a $700 payday. They caught their fish on watermelon red and cran-apple wacky worms in 8-12' of grass from an all day bite between Housen Bay and the 1215 area.

4th place team-(8 bass/25.29 lbs)- Mark Russell and Charles Clause had a slow start on the first day only weighing in 6.68 lbs. Going into the second day they fished a pumpkin/pepper Culprit worm dipped in chartreuse over a 6' grass ridge. They boated their first keeper of the day at about 7am when their bite quit. By noon they were questioning whether to weigh-in or not. But decided to go back to their spot just south of Pendleton Bridge on the Texas side, and at about 2pm Mark caught their 8.56 kicker that took the overall big bass of the tournament, finishing with 8 bass/ 25.29 lbs for a $600 payday for 4th place and $500 for big bass.
