5 Bass/18.81 Lbs Takes Pineywoods Classic

Shelby County Chamber of Commerce "Pineywoods Classic 2001"
Saturday, June 30, 2001, Huxley Bay Marina, Lake Toledo Bend, TX.

"My fishing partner did most of the catching today, grinned half of the winning team that had just weighed-in a 5 bass/18.81 lb Toledo Bend catch. "But my one bass was the biggest of the five, he answered by poking fun at his partner. "Sure, "sure, she retorted with equal humor, "But mine were on the "WINNING HALF" of the leader-board.

Typical early summer weather conditions arrived with the 78 teamed anglers who launched into this "rambling" 95-mile long -by- 1200 shore-lined mile bass fishing Mecca to fish the Pineywoods Classic. Often referred to as the "fishing end" of Lake Toledo Bend, Shelby County TX, also harbors Huxley Bay Marina, the host Marina for this tournament fundraiser for the important economic development projects and programs of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. The first event of its kind, the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce were more than happy with the results for their first benefit tournament event and are now in the process of planning for next years event.

1st place team-(5 bass/19.81 lbs)- Mike Wheatley and Cathy Hooks of Sam Rayburn TX, "hovered" their Triton/Mercury bass-rig over 10' Bison area ridges to work Shimano rods and reels spooled with 15 lb test P-line. "We fished brown/parrot Mudbugs and Carolina rigged watermelon Cyclone tubes to catch our winning weight today, Wheatley informed, adding, "But my partner Cathy Hooks caught most of our bass, but allowed me to catch our 5.33 lb "kicker", which anchored our winning stringer and became the overall big bass catch of the day.

2nd place team-(5 bass/18.18 lbs)- Ron Bowman and Phillip Lee of Shreveport LA, put their Champion/Mercury bass-rig over mid-lake brush-flats and creek channel bends to work Falcon rods and Shimano reels spooled with 20 lb test P-line. The 2nd place team fished TX and c-rigged redbug Zoom worms, red-shad Culprit worms, and green/pumpkin Zoom lizards to catch 12 bass between a 7am to 8am early bite.

3rd place team-(5 bass/17.12 lbs)- Mike Metcalf of Center TX, and Randy Quails of Streetman TX, ran their Ranger/Mercury bass-rig between mid-lake and north-lake areas to work c-rigged Lake Fork Tackle prototype soft-plastics and crank-baits along creek timber, main lake points, and mid-lake ridges to catch 10 bass from an early bite that put a limit in their well by 9am.

Viper Casting Challenge- Testing their casting skills the tournament anglers were put through special casting competition that required some exceptional finesse and difficulty skills for points. "This new format for tournament anglers opens up a whole new level for the team angler competition, stated director David Masterson as he awarded the first place prize to "Team Port-A-Cool, Bobby Barrarez and Phil Hennigan of Center TX, for acquiring 2,850 points for their casting skills.

All bass were recovered and live released by the Shelby County Bass Anglers with assistance by the Shimano/SRA-LA fish recovery krewe.
