By Ed Snyder

Anglers Choice East Texas 2001East Texas Amateur Series
Saturday, July 7, 2001, Frontier Park Marina, Lake Toledo Bend TX.

"We got very fortunate today, stated the team which had just tallied a 5 bass/18.45 lb mark on the leader-board, "further stating that they were forced to fish three different spots before they could catch enough weight today explained the Jasper TX, team as they informed of having to "pluck" a bass here and "pluck" a bass before being able to cull up a decent 5 bass tournament limit, which included two "kickers" from a late bite that dominated the tournament field by almost 2 Lbs.

"HOT" & "HUMID" were the key words for today's East Texas Summer extremes as 104 teamed amateur anglers launched into their July 4th Holiday weekend to probe the depths of Toledo Bend to locate and catch a tournament limit for their 3pm weigh-in at Frontier Park Marina. This event would experience a very short weigh-in time as most of the teams either had light limits or no limits at all.

1st place team- (5 bass/18.45 lbs)- Richard Carpenter and John Jordan of Jasper TX, maneuvered their Triton/Mercury bass-rig to three fishing spots to work Castaway rods and Quantum reels spooled with 45 lb test Lynch line. The 1st place team fished 1 oz camo Oldham jigs with watermelon/green/chartreuse Larew craws within three mid-lake 15' grass-spots to catch 8 bass from an all day bite, which included John Jordan's 7.03 lb "kicker" caught on 1:30 pm bite. John's bass held for the "overall" honors as the largest bass of the tournament.

2nd place team- (5 bass/16.57 lbs)- Rick Edwards of Groves and Larry Plunk of Beaumont TX, put their Skeeter/Yamaha bass-rig over 15'-16' south-lake grass-humps to work Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 10/50 lb test Spider-Wire. The 2nd place team fished 1 oz black/brown/amber jigs with pumpkin/green Larew craws to catch 7 bass from an all day bite that included Rick's 5.86 lb 2nd big bass caught on a 1:30 pm bite.

3rd place team- (.5 bass/16.17 lbs)- Vince Neal and Harold Moore of Caldwell TX, ran their Triton/Mercury bass-rig to 16'-18' south-lake grass-points to work Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 50 lb test Spider-Wire. The 3rd place team fished 1 oz camo Oldham and 1 oz black/brown/amber MR. Blitz jigs with pumpkin/green Larew craws. After moving to a little pocket late in the day, the anglers managed to catch 8 bass between a 1:30 to 2:45 pm bite that put the 3rd place weight in their boat.
