5 Bass/20.86 Lb Catch Claims Special Olympics Benefit

2nd Annual Louisiana Special Olympics Benefit Team Tournament
Saturday, July 21, 2001, Cypress Bend Resort, Lake Toledo Bend, LA.

"We searched for the thicker clumps of grass which were within the thinner grassy areas, explained the team who had just weighed-in the heaviest catch of the Special Olympics benefit tournament, "And that is exactly where those bass were hiding, they further informed as they stepped off to receive their first place awards. The Nederland TX, team competed against 115 other anglers who braved the "HOT" summer heat to help raise needed funds for the Special Olympic Athletes of Louisiana.

"This is the 2nd year for us, stated Pat Carpenter, director for the Louisiana Special Olympics committee, "And we're very proud of those 54 teams who gave up their weekend to fish this Toledo Bend event with us this year. "We hold over 100 events per year to help raise funds for the benefit of the Louisiana Special Olympics, Pat informed, "further telling that the organization has over 12,000 athletes who are training compete in the Special Olympics Games. "The Bayou Bassmasters" of Alexandria, LA, are a tremendous help to us with their statewide organizational support, as well as the Bell South employees who volunteered to help run the tournament operations here at this absolutely beautiful Cypress Bend Resort on Lake Toledo Bend.

Based out of Hammond LA, the Special Olympics group raise funds for those important programs and projects needed for the Special Olympics Athletes. The Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries Department has also involved its organization with putting together a Special Olympics Fishing Tournament to be held out of Baton Rouge LA, which we hope will become a major sporting event for the Louisiana Special Olympics Athletes.

1st place-Team- (5 bass/20.86 lbs)- Kris Wilson and David Harvey of Nederland TX, put their Skeeter/Yamaha bass-rig over 15' south-lake grass-points to work Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 50 lb test Lynch braid. The first place team fished 1 oz black/blue and camo MR Blitz jigs with smoke/blue/red and smoke/green/orange Larew craws to catch & cull their winning weight from the thicker patches of grass which were within the thinner grassy areas.

2nd place-Team- (5 bass/18.04 lbs)- George Jean JR, and George Jean SR, ran their ProCraft/Mercury to Housen Bay to work Quantum rods and reels spooled with 20/15 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. The father and son team from Evans LA, fished TX and C-rigged watermelon flukes and worms to catch 10 bass from 18' - 22' outside grass-lines to catch their 2nd place win.

3rd place-Team- (5 bass/17.40 lbs)- Jerry Sisco and Jeff Smith of Sulphur LA, put their Skeeter/Yamaha bass-rig over south-lake creek-swing points to fish Kistler rods and Diawa reels spooled with 30 lb test Spider-Wire. The 3rd place finishers pitched TX rigged 10 & ½ inch plum and plum-apple Zoom monster worms within 15'-18' outside grass-edges for an 11:am to 2:15 pm bite to catch 7 bass.

4th place team-(5 bass/16.46 lbs)-Wayne Ebarb of Lananna and Chuck Thompson of Florien LA, put their Ranger/Johnson bass-rig up on Beson area ridges to work Fenwick/Castaway rods and Ambassadeur reels spooled with 12/15 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. The 4th place team fished shad colored Norman DD-22's and brown parrot Mudbugs along 22' to 12' ridge-drops by cranking down to the 14' slopes to catch 8 bass from an all day bite, which included Wayne Ebarb's 8:am -5.86 lb Big Bite that took the "overall" honors.

5th place team- (5 bass/12.56 lbs)- Chris Green and Craig Dowling of Shreveport LA, put their Ranger/Mercury bass-rig over San Miquel humps and points to work Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 14 lb test Stren. The 5th place team managed to catch 10 bass while drop-shotting 4 inch "Holly Park" red-shad straight tailed worms over 20' structure.

All bass were recovered and live released by Shimano/SRA-LA fish recovery.
