5 Bass/18.50 Lbs Wins Fort Polk Bassmasters

11th Annual Fort Polk Community Bassmasters Fall Team Tournament
Saturday, October 6, 2001,U.S.Army Rec-Center, Lake Toledo Bend, LA.

Cold Front conditions and dropping lake levels may have hindered the 54 teamed anglers who launched out of the U.S. Army Rec-Center to fish, but their competitive edge was witnessed to be at peak levels as the 3:pm weigh-in digitized some hefty Toledo Bend bass catches that would top-out the leader-board with a 5 bass/18.50 lb catch.

1st-place team-(18.50 lbs)- Richard Wilson and George Jeane of Evans LA, put their Procraft/Mariner bass-rig over Six Mile grass to work Rippling River rods and Quantum reels spooled with 15 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. The winning duo fished ¾ oz chartreuse Rat-L-Traps along 8'-15' grass-edges to catch an early bite, which included the "overall" big bass of 5.5 lbs caught by Richard Wilson on an 8:30 am big bite.

2nd-place team-(14.6 lbs)- Phillip Grooms SR and Phillip Grooms JR of Rosepine LA put their Triton/Johnson bass-rig over Housen Bay grass to work Castaway rods and Quantum reels spooled with 12 lb test Stren. The father & son team fished white FLW buzz-baits and bass colored Zara Spooks along 8'-12' grass-edges to catch their fish.

3rd-place team-(Benny Jerrell of Lessville and C. Zudek of Rosepine LA, put their Basscat/Yamaha over south-lake grass to work Cyclone rods and Shimano reels spooled with 17 lb test P-line. The team fished C-rigged watermelon Zoom super-flukes and 1 oz George Jeane black/blue jigs along 10' grass-lines to catch their weight, which included Benny's 4-4 lb kicker on a 9am bite.

4th-place team-(14.35 lbs)- James Matney of Lake Charles LA, and Mike Haimon of Many LA, put their Triton/Yamaha bass-rig over south-lake grass to work Castaway/Falcon rods and Shimano/Ambassadeur reels spooled with 50 lb test Power Braid. The 3rd place team fished 1 oz Cyclone mardi-gras jigs with Mardi-gras Reaction Lure Paddle-dog trailers along 5'-7' grass-lines to catch their weight, which included a 5.35 lb kicker caught on a noon big bite by James Matney.

5th place team-(Jon Hosfern and Butch Cart of Leesville LA, put their Hydra Sport/Yamaha over south-lake weed-beds to work Berkley rods and Ambassadeur reels spooled with 15 lb test Stren. The 5th place team fished ½ oz chartreuse Terminator spinner-baits with MR Twister chartreuse twin tail trailers over 5' weed patches to catch their weight, which included a 4-5 lb kicker caught by Butch on an 8am big bite.

All bass recovered and live released by the Fort Polk Bassmaster fish recovery team.

The event paid back 80% of the tournament fee plus 1st & 2nd big bass-
