Media Bass 2001 Team Trail Championship
Sunday, October 7, 2001, Twin Dikes Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

Adversities always seem arrive with bass tournaments, and so it was for the Media Bass Team Championship as they launched 136 teams into the teeth of a seasonal cold-front, causing the teams, who had arrived from the Texoma, South-East, Slot-Lakes, North-East, Metroplex, Eastern, and Central team divisions to dig deep into their bag of bass tricks to try and pull the winning technique from their tackle packs. One team, a Central Texas Division team, managed to find "that" winning pattern by dragging lizards to put the "Championship" bass in their weigh-in sack.

ReCap-Day-1- Whipping Cold-front conditions patterned the bass-i-tudes as the Media Bass teams were allowed to trailer for day-1 competition. Central division took the lead with a 5 bass/15.77 lb catch by David Ragsdale and Danny Montgomery. Day-1 -Big bass of 6.68 lbs came in with the N/E division team of J.P. Duran and Gary Armstrong.

Day-2- High pressure blue-birds and slightly calmer winds ruled final day bassin' as the Media Bass teams dug deep into their tackle packs to try and catch enough bass-weight for winning this Team Championship.

1st place team-(10 bass/25.63 lbs)- Central Div/Team-Ted Priesing and Ben Shaffer of Dallas TX, put their Champion/Mercury bass-rig over Veach Basin moss both days to work Falcon rods and Ambassadeur reels spooled with Berkley Big Game mono. The winning team fished C-rigged red-bug Zoom lizards along 10'-18' grass-drops to claim their Championship prize of a fully rigged Nitro 901-SDX/Mercury bass boat valued at $27,500.

2nd place team-(10 bass/25.52 lbs)- Texoma Division- Rob Burns and Mike Burns of Plano TX, put their Triton/Mercury bass-rig up along Veach Basin hydrilla patches to work Allstar rods and Daiwa reels spooled with 15 lb test P-line. The brothers team fished Storm Lures Texas Shads and white-blue-striped Zara Spooks over 3'-8' hydrilla clumps to catch their 2nd place weight. The team tied with 3rd place team and agreed to split the payout rather than have a regulation "flip-off" casting contest.

3rd place team-(10 bass/25.52 lbs)- South East Texas- Albert Weaver of Cleveland TX, and Ronald Reed of Milam TX, put their Champion/Yamaha over south-lake grass to work Ugly Sticks and Shimano reels spooled with 14 lb test Trilene. The 3rd place team managed to tie the 2nd place finishers by fishing 1 oz chartreuse Hildebrandt spinner-baits along 4'-8' grass-clumps to catch their weight. But to avoid the "dreaded" flip-off casting contest they agreed to split the money difference.

Overall Big Bass-(7.15 lbs)- MetroPlex Division-Paul Erick of Garland TX, and Jeff Francis of Farmers Branch TX, put their Champion/Mercury bass-rig over main-lake grass to work Falcon Rods and Abu-Garcia reels spooled with 12 lb test P-line and Berkley mono. They fished C-rigged Zoom watermelon lizards and TX rigged watermelon Zoom flukes along 8'-10' sharp point-grass, when Paul nailed a 7-15 lb kicker on a fluke at 8am.
