By Patty Schaefer

The Walmart Texas Tournament Trail has had a phenomenal first season, finishing up with their championship on Toledo Bend Lake October 20-21, 2001. The 51 pro's and 51 co-anglers who qualified to fish this event came into this tournament each hungry for their share of the $195,000.00 in cash and prizes to be given away.

1st place Pro - Stan Burgay of Timpson, TX came in with 16 lbs even on day one, putting him in third place coming into day two. Knowing the field of pro's he was fishing against, he kept his DD-22 cranking all day in 5-6' main lake structure on the north end to bring in his catch. Weighing in 20 lbs 7 oz. on day two for a total combined weight of 36 lbs 7 oz., his efforts won him a check for $15,000.00 and a Ranger / Mercury bass rig valued at $35,000.00. Stan has been a guide for many years and is currently a police officer in Center, TX. He stated that this is the best tournament trail he has fished and he has been honored to fish with this field of fishermen.

2nd place Pro - Randy Qualls of Winkler, TX had a very nice sack on day one weighing 17 lbs 2 oz. putting him in second place coming into day two. He reported catching his second day catch on crank baits in 7' of water, bringing in his limit weighing 16 lbs 14 oz., a total weight of 34 lbs to maintain his second place position. His efforts paid off, winning a check for $6,000.00 plus a bonus check of $5,000.00. Randy fished just north of the mid lake area concentrating on structure and points. "The fish were stacked" he reported and his best bite came around 1:00.

3rd place Pro - Jerrel Pringle of China Spring, TX led the event at the end of day 1. He caught his fish on carolina rigs the first day and crank baits on the final day. His total combined weight was 32 lbs 8 oz. winning him a check for $4,500.00

1st place Co-angler - Mark Tullis of Conroe, TX brought in a limit on day 1 weighing 16 lbs 1 oz. putting him in first place going into day 2. He concentrated on main lake poings with timber and deep water access. Mark threw a DD-14 all day and brought in two fish weighing 4 lbs 8 oz. which was just enough to keep him holding first place overall and received a check for $5,000.00 and a bonus check for another $5,000.00. He came into the championship ranking 19th place in the trail always placing just out of the money in the qualifying events. He came into this event knowing this was the one to win.

This tournament is run by Operation Bass, the nation's premier bass tournament organization. The anglers fished four one-day events to qualify, and there is no entry fee for the championship.
