10 Bass/29.89 lbs Wins "Team-Splash" Championship
By Ed Snyder

Sealy Outdoors 2001 "Team-Splash" Championship
Sunday, October 28, 2001, Twin Dikes Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

Cold-front blue birds ruled this event with choppy north-winds cooling the lake waters. But with the top 40 teams of this "Team Splash" circuit competing for the $80,600 being offered in this Championship event, the final outcome for the leader-board marks were expected to be high. One thing was for sure though, the team who managed to connect with the first place winning pattern for this event would trailer home a "fully-rigged" Triton-186/Evinrude-150 bass-rig attached to a "fully-rigged" Dodge 1500 Sport-truck valued at $45,700………."Not a bad days catch for doing a little bass fishing!

"We've had an excellent tournament season, informed CEO and Tournament Director, Bob Sealy, with over $40,600 in cash being paid out to the anglers who fished our Team-Splash bass circuit this year. "And we expect to have another great tournament season next year with our 2002 Team-Splash season paying out $42,000 in "guaranteed" cash money payouts. "In fact, Bob Sealy added, "Over $1,000,000 in cash and prizes will be guaranteed for our Big Bass Splash and Team Splash events for our 2002 season Sealy Outdoors bass tournament season. "So mark your tournament calendars next year for fishing and competing at our Sealy Outdoors Tournament events.

Recap-Day-1-Due to extreme low lake levels on Lake Toledo Bend, Tournament Director Bob Sealy made the decision to pull the Toledo phase of his split lake championship for two days of competition on Lake Sam Rayburn. Cold front blue bird conditions ruled 1 st day competition for the 40 teams who qualified, giving the first place leader-board position to the 5 bass/16.70 lb catch of father & son team of George and Marty Kelly of Jasper, TX. Day-1 big bass of 7.34 lbs came in with Ricky Friedrich of Bailey's Prarrie and Matt Reid of Madisonville TX.

Day-2- The strong high pressure blue bird conditions seemed to hinder most of the anglers, but a father & son team from Jasper TX, managed to pry enough bass-bites from the cooling waters to win the Championship position for this event.

1st place-(10 bass/29.89 lbs)- Marty and George Kelley of Jasper TX, put their Champion/Mercury bass-rig over Canyon and Phophers creek-edges to wrangle up their winning bass weights. The father & son team worked Shimano/Allstar rods and Shimano/Ambassaduer reels spooled with 17 lb test Stren and Berkley Fire-line. The Legends Bass Boat Pro/Anglers fished Shad Norman DD-22's and 1 / 2 oz Stanley white/chartreuse spinner-baits with double willow blades. "We only had 3 bass by 3pm today, they informed as they told of running to Farmers Flats to try and fill their limit and managed to catch two bass by 3:10 pm, losing 2 and breaking one off before heading in for their 3:30 pm weigh-in. The Toro Liners business team managed to win the Dodge Truck and Triton bass boat valued at $45,700.

2nd place-(10 bass/26.87 lbs)- Tommy Dickerson of Orange TX, and David Truax of Beaumont TX, put their Nitro/Mercury bass-rig over scattered grass-clumps up near the 147 bridge area to work Quantum rods and reels spooled with 17 lb test Mason line. The 2nd place team slow-rolled 3 / 8 oz chartreuse Strike King spinner-baits to catch their bass.

3rd place-(10 bass/26.87 lbs)- Mike Bono SR and Mike Bono JR of Lake Charles LA, ran their Skeeter/Yamaha bass-rig to south-lake grass-clumps to work 1 oz black/brown and black/brown/amber Oldham jigs with Larew craws. The father & son team also fished Norman shad DD-14 cranks to catch their bass from 10'-12' humps and 10'-17' grass-edges.

Day-2 Overall Big Bass-(6.34 lbs)- Mike Metcalf of Center TX, and Randy Quails of Steetman TX, fished their pattern over south-lake grass-points where Mike hooked his 6.34 lb "overall" on a Brushog between 12noon and 1pm.
