16.75 lb Wins Excel Open Team Tournament

3/24/02.....Waterwood Marina, Lake Livingston Cloudy, overcasting skies with high winds made fishing somewhat difficult for the 26 teams to fish the Excel Open Team Tournament that was held out at Waterwood Marina on Lake Livingston. The water conditions for this tournament was somewhat muddy and most claimed that the water was clearer on the south end of the lake as compared to the North end. For one team a nice size big bass of 6.69 lb was brought in despite the weather conditions which put a little extra in their pocket books. 1st place anglers, Richard Carpenter and John Jordan ( 5 bass16.75lbs) $1475.00. These anglers positioned their Triton/Mercury bass rig over shallow waters of 2-5 feet focusing mainly on reeds to work Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 15 lb Berkley Big Game using white spinner baits and watermelon plastic worms. These anglers explained that they caught most of their fish all day long with the last one coming in around the 2:00 hour. 2nd place anglers, Albert White from Crosby,Tx and Albert White from Houston,Tx (5 bass 16.53 lbs) $925.00. This duo fished with their Champion/Mercury bass rig mainly up in the main lake regions to work Falcon Rods and Quantum Reels spooled with 20 pound P-Line usingwhite spinner baits with a nickel color blade. Bill explained that they focused mainly on standing timber that were about 2 feet tall and stayed mainly in about 3 feet of water. 3rd place anglers, Jason Shropshire from Cleveland, Tx and Richie Thorton from Shepherd, Tx ( 5 bass 15.22 lbs) $ 800.00. These anglers positioned their Ranger/Mariner bass rig over the north end of the lake above the 190 bridge to work Allstar rods and ambassador reels using 15 and 17 lb P-line . This duo used Zoom lizards and spinner baits but would not quite let the cat out of the bag on what color they were successful with. Jason explained that they focused mainly on logs and laydowns and fished in 2-3 feet of water. Big Bass for this tournament -6.69 lbs-went to Jeff Lennox of Scott, LA who fished with Lindy Hadley of Brookland, TX. Jeff expalined that he caught his big bass with a crawl worm on a Shimano pitching reel and Loomis Reel. He used 20 lb Berkley Big Game and caught him in the Kickapoo creek area on reeds. There was a 100% release of all of the bass that were caught-This tournament was sponsored by Holiday Inn Express in Japser, Needmore Tackle, B-CS Trophy Shop and wwwfishingworld.com
