Local Anglers Win the Final Tournament of The Season for Baskin's Wrangler Angler Tournament Trail

April 20, 2002........ Lakeside Marina, Lake Livingston, TX

Lake Livingston was the final stop for this years rookie tournament trail -Baskin's Wrangler Angler Tournament. 68 teamed anglers from all over the state came to Lake Livingston in hopes to add points to their final standings to capture the title of angler's of the year which promised to pay and extra $5,000 in cash ! These anglers had beautiful fishing weather today with the temperatures creeping up into the mid to upper 80's, light and variable winds, but somewhat muddy water conditions. When the final bags were weighed in, it was local anglers from the Lake Livingston area who captured the top three spots for this tournament and they are as followed: 1st Mark Mueck/ Yancy Long ( 5 bass...... 13.70lbs $1850.00) This angler duo from Livingston, TX was all smiles today as they explained that they positioned their Skeeter/Yamaha bass rig starting up in the north part of the lake and finished their day down south to work G Lumis and All-Star rods with Shimano and Quantum reels spooled with 15 lb Berkley Big game using chartreuse spinner baits. Yancy stated that they fished mainly in about 2-5 feet of water concentrating on the shoreline. They also stated that they caught their all of their fish real early that morning and again until right before weigh in. 2nd Slade Dearman from Onalaska, TX /Bill Ander from Lake Charles, La ( 5 bass ......13.69 lbs $ 1400.00) These anglers placed their Triton/Mercury bass boat down south to work Castaway Rod and Reels spooled with 15 lbs Berkeley Big game and 20 lbs Berkley Big Game to use watermelon Bitsy jigs and chartreuse, peach, clear combo spinner baits. Slade commented that they caught their fish all throughout the day and that they fished in about 1 foot of water concentrating on the shorelines and pockets. 3rd Ben Cockrell/Albert Orgeron ( 5 bass.........13.29 lbs $900) This angler duo from Livingston, TX was all smiles today with their 3rd place finish stating that they positioned their Triton/Mercury bass boat in Palmetto Park to work Kistler and All-Star rods with Ambassador reels spooled with 50 lbs Braided line using black bug jigs for most of their day. Ben explained that they were fishing in practically 6 inches of water concentrating on mostly brush tops and that they caught their fish all throughout the day. 4th Steve and Jeremy Strong (5 bass.......13.20 lbs $500) This father and son duo from Livingston, Tx stated that they took their Champion/Mercury bass rig down south to work Kistler rods and Shimano reels spooled with 12 & 20 lbs Stren line spooled with chartreuse spinner baits and blue gill tubes in mainly 1 foot of water concentrating mostly on wood and reeds. Big Bass......5.07 lbs $330.00.....Ricky Guy from Deer Park, Tx captured bragging right to today's "Big Bass". Ricky stated that he caught the bass around 1:45 PM in the north part of the lake. He was using a Castaway rod and a Shimano reel spooled with 15 lbs Trilene and caught him on a black jig on near laydowns. Three checks totalling $150.00 each were also given out at the end of the tournament to three lucky teams who fished the tournament by a drawing. The lucky winning teams were: Scott David and Clint Meyers, Willie Gill and William, and Randy Hillhouse and Robert Hogue The most waited announcement for this years anglers of the year came at the very end of the tournament award ceremony. After all of the points were in and tallied up, Dicky Newberry and John Gunnels from Houston were the big winners and put and extra $5,000 in there pockets. This duo worked extremely hard throughout the season and they well deserve this title placing in the top 4 in all but this last tournament. Congratulations!! This tournament would not have been a huge success with out the hard work of Wayne and Elaine Lewis, Steve and Kim McLauren and Greg Baskins. Also this tournament is thankful for its sponsors and too without them it would not have been such a success. They are Baskin's, Wrangler Rugged Wear, Justin, Pepsi, Texas Burger, Brookshire Brothers Food and Pharmacy, and Holiday Inn Express.
