5 Bass / 23.58 lbs Wins Bass-N-Bucks - Toledo Bend
By Patty Schaefer

Bass-N-Bucks held their 4th in a series of 7 tournaments at Cypress Bend Park - Toledo Bend. A field of 202 teams came and battled the 25 mph winds and swells up to 6'. This isn't the first rodeo for these seasoned anglers who brought in 538 bass to the scales weighing an incredible 1,363.2 lbs. First place stringer weighed in at 23.58 lbs and first place big bass tipped the scales at 8.77 lbs. In these fishing tournament games hundredths of ounces can and often does make the difference in hundreds - sometimes thousands of dollars in prize money.

1st Place - 23.58 lbs - Stan Burgay (Timpson, TX) and Lance Hughes (Center, TX) took their Ranger / Yamaha clear up to the Huxley Bay area for their fish. After winning another tournament yesterday in that area, they took the chance that their fish would hold for them today, and they did. They caught their limit with a nice 7.55 lb kicker. Fishing with Stanley black/blue jigs with Gene Larew craw trailers along with Stanley Tubes in pumpkin green color, using Shimano combo's and Berkley Big Game 20 lb line they pitched in 2-5' depths. Because of the distance and wind conditions, they had to put their poles down by noon to get back to the weigh in on time.

2nd Place - 21.06 lbs - Stephen Johnston (Hemphill, TX) and Mike Cortelloni (Many, LA) fished just north of Pendleton bridge in their Skeeter / Yamaha bass rig. Tying watermelon Falcon Jigs with Reaction trailers and Gene Larew craws in pumpkin gold on their Shimano and Kistler combo's with braided Triple Fish 50 lb line, they pitched the brush on 3' main lake points. Mike reported that they lost 2 big fish but still had a nice 7.16 lb kicker in the bag.

3rd Place - 21.05 lbs - Father & son team of Richard A. and Richard L. Cunningham (Lake Charles & DeRidder, LA) not only got 3rd place honors with their limit but also took 1st place Big Bass with their 8.77 lb kicker. Using Falcon/Abu Garcia / Berkley Big Game combo's, they fished the grass and buck brush along the banks with Zoom watermelon Trick worms. They fished coves in the mid lake area and said they just tried to cover a lot of water.

4th Place - 21.03 lbs - Jerry & Patricia Gold (Spicewood, TX) took their Ranger / Mercury to the Lowes Creek and Tennessee Bay area. Throwing crank baits in shad and firetiger colors, their bass were found suspended in the trees along creek ledges in 12-14'. Their best bite came in mid morning. This couple uses Castaway / Shimano / 14 lb Stren combo's.
