Beaumont Bass Angler Wins SE Texas Bass Federation Tournament - Toledo Bend
By Patty Schaefer

Twelve clubs totaling 57 anglers competed in the Southeast Texas Bass Federation Tournament held at Lowe's Creek Park on Toledo Bend Lake April 20, 2002. With the lake level being over normal pool already topped with fluctuatiing levels and both spawn and post spawn bass to contend with, these anglers had quite the day finding their "big bite". While many reports of lots of bass being caught, trying to get keepers on the end of the line was one of the biggest challenges. Danny Golden of the Beaumont Bass Angler's came in to show them how it is done.

Taking first place overal with 14.31 lbs / 5 fish and second place Big Bass with his 6.25 lb kicker was Danny Golden of the
Beaumont Bass Anglers. He found his fish in 3-5' of water on grassy banks using a chrome/blue rattle trap as well as a white spinnerbait. He took his Champion / Evinrude bass rig to the south end of the lake to fish secondary points with his Quantum / Triline Big Game 15 lb test and said he caught a lot of fish, but only caught his 5 keepers. Danny said he had a small bass on his line, about 8", and was watching about a 5 lb'r follow it to the boat when the bigger bass engulfed the little one, only to let the mangled baby go and swim off.

Second place overall was taken by Tommy Loving, also of the Beaumont Bass Anglers. He brought in a limit weighing 13.84 lbs with a kicker earning first place Big Bass weighing 6.84 lbs. Tommy took his Triton / Mercury bass rig to the south end and fished in 7' grassy cove areas. He used rogues, white buzz baits and watermelon red wacky worms for his catch. He reported breaking off two "nice ones" and he fishes with Allstar / Shimano / Stren & Spiderwire combo's.

There were a lot of reports of "breaking off" from the anglers. The bass on Toledo have been fiesty and the sows are there, so check your knots - your gear - be ready for them. Ron Werner made an announcement for open invitations to an International Bass Tournament in Mexico. The tournament will be held May 4th & 5th and boaters as well as non boaters are invited. for more information on this event please contact Ed Parton or Ron Werner at ron#1txucom.net or call 936-522-1144.
