5 Bass/16.52 Lbs Nabs Excel Team Win

"For the Weekend Bass Anglers" 2002 EXCEL Sportsman/Team Bass Tournament Series -
Sunday, April 14, 2002, Twin Dikes Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

Spring-like weather conditions continued to provide the stage setting for the Excel tournament circuit as 72 Teamed anglers enjoyed warm, sunny skies with light breezes, which was a far cry from the nasty thunderstorms predicted for today. Taking advantage of the weatherman's "foopah" the Excel teams managed to tally up a total of 127 bass weighing 328 lbs, topping the leader-board with a hefty 5 bass/16.52 lb catch, with a 7.87 -lb bass taking the big bass honor.

Producing bass tournaments in East Texas since 1989, Randy Knight now offers a new circuit for the 2002 tournament season. The EXCEL Fishing Tournaments operate two circuit format series.
SPORTSMAN'S SERIES- Saturday tournaments are Sportsman's Series has an entry fee of $150 per event and we will pay 15% of the field. (Based on 75 teams) A Sportsman's Series Championship, held on Rayburn in Sept. or Oct., has a $20,000 guaranteed cash payout.
OPEN TEAM SERIES- The Sunday tournaments are Open Team Series with a $200 entry fee per event, which pays 15% of the field. Saturday is the official practice day. Entry fee must be paid before entering lake on practice day. An Open Team Championship offers a $25,000 guaranteed cash payout for the Open Team Championship.

1st Place-(5 bass/16.52)- Jack Carroll and Mark Weidenfield of Lufkin TX, maneuvered their Skeeter/Yamaha bass-rig over mid-lake buck-brush to work Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 15 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. The Lufkin duo fished pumpkin/chartreuse Texas rigged Zoom lizards and Bass Assassin flukes around 4'-6' brush to catch their bass between a 9am to 11am bite. "I hooked a good solid 11 lb bass early, stated Jack as he groaned about losing the big fish after it "slammed" into the side of his boat………. "OUCH!!"

2nd Place-(5 bass/16.42)- Scott David of Goodrich and Klint Meyers of Livingston TX, put their BassCat/Mercury bass-rig over south-lake buck-brush to work Kistler rods and Phlueger reels spooled with 20 lb test P-line. The 2nd place team fished Texas rigged bubblegum Larew craws and Louisiana paddle tailed gitzits within 2'-3' buck-brush patches. Scott and Klint caught their bass from an all day bite, which included Scott trying to entice an 11 to 12 lb bass from a spawn-bed, "but, unfortunately for us, Scott grimaced, "our check-in time eliminated that possible catch……….. "OUCH!!"

3rd Place-(5 bass/15.58)- Richard Carpenter and John Jordan of Jasper, TX, put their Ranger/Mercury bass-rig over shallow mid-lake brush-patches to fish Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 15 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. The Jasper team worked the shallow inside brush for the early bite with watermelon Senko's and then dropped to the deeper outside edges for the late bite.

Overall Big Bass-(7.87)- Mike Cortelloni of Many LA, fished by himself today as he ran his Skeeter/Yamaha, "to just relax under the shad-trees and take it easy today, stated Mike as he told of working a Kistler rod and Shimano reel spooled with 12 lb test Triple-Fish line. "I was just trying to take it easy and have a good time when I nailed that 7.87 "kicker", Mike chuckled, as he claimed the "overall" big bass honor. "Man, Mike interviewed, "if I had had a net with me today I could've won this event!…………."OUCH!!"

2nd big bass-(6.33)- Al Gomez and Ryan Saunders of Brenham TX, ran their Stealth/Mercury bass-rig to Veach Basin grass to work Quantum rods and Quantum Energy reels spooled with 12 lb test Stren line. The Brenham team were fishing an 8'-9' grass-bed when Al stuck a 2pm big bite that put the 6.33 lb bass in the boat.
