5 Bass/22.58 Lbs Takes Excel Sportsman Series

"For the Weekend Bass Anglers" 2002 EXCEL Sportsman/Team Bass Tournament Series -
Saturday, April 13, 2002, Twin Dikes Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

Awesome weather dominated the EXCEL tournament day as warm spring sunshine, along with rising Rayburn waters, set the stage for today's bass-bite. The 80 teamed Sportsman Series anglers, who fished mostly post-spawn bass patterns for catching their competitive bass-sacks, had a hard time connecting, but one team managed to top the tournament leader-board with a very impressive 22.58 lb catch.

Producing bass tournaments in East Texas since 1989, Randy Knight now offers a new circuit for the 2002 tournament season. The EXCEL Fishing Tournaments operate two circuit format series.
SPORTSMAN'S SERIES- Saturday tournaments are Sportsman's Series has an entry fee of $150 per event and we will pay 15% of the field. (Based on 75 teams) A Sportsman's Series Championship, held on Rayburn in Sept. or Oct., has a $20,000 guaranteed cash payout.
OPEN TEAM SERIES- The Sunday tournaments are Open Team Series with a $200 entry fee per event, which pays 15% of the field. Saturday is the official practice day. Entry fee must be paid before entering lake on practice day. An Open Team Championship offers a $25,000 guaranteed cash payout for the Open Team Championship.

1st Place-(5 bass/22.58)- "We found our winning bass holding in deeper waters, announced Alan Moore and Clint Teutsch of Lufkin, TX, as they explained how they ran their Javelin/Johnson bass-rig "all over the doggone lake" to fish 3'-10' brush-patches. The winning team worked Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 15 lb test Berkley Big Game mono rigged with watermelon Zoom trick-worms and flukes, as well as xmas tree Senko's to catch their bass. "We concentrated mostly on fishing the deeper brush with very slow retrieves, stated Teutsch, who also informed of catching the 7.25 lb 2nd big bass of the tournament on a 10:30 am Senko bite.

2nd Place-(5 bass/14.77)- "We had to go farther back into the brush to catch our bigger bass, informed Mike Curry of Burkeville, and Linnis Gibbons of Tomball TX, as they told of running their Gambler/Mercury bass-rig to Veach Basin brush & willows. The 2nd place team fished Allstar rods and Shimano reels spooled with 10 & 15 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. "I broke off 2 really nice bass early on, stated Curry, as he spoke of finally switching to 15 lb test after losing a solid 5 lb bass. The 2nd place team caught at least 10 keeper bass to cull their weight from by fishing watermelon/red Zoom trick-worms and Senko's within 2'-4' brush and willows.

3rd Place-(5 bass/14.12)- Dan Crockett of Tomball and Bryan Portis of Houston TX, put their Hydrasport/Evinrude bass-rig over Needmore Point brush to work Allstar rods and Daiwa & Ambassadeur reels spooled with 15 lb test Hi-C Quatro line. The 3rd place team fished watermelon/red Zoom brush-hogs with dipped chartreuse tails within 5'-8' brush-patches to cull their weight from an all day 40 bass bite.

Overall Big Bass-(7.30)-The Lufkin TX, brothers team, John and Mark Maddox put their Triton/Evinrude bass-rig over south-lake brush to work Castaway rods and Shimano reels spooled with 20 lb test Berkley Big Game mono. The brothers were concentrating their efforts on fishing xmas tree Senko's within 4' brush-patches when brother/John set his hook into the 7.30 lb tournament "overall" big bass on a 10:30 am Senko bite.
