24.51 lbs Seizes final Bass 'n Bucks Tournament for the 2002 Season

One hundred sixty seven teams came to fish the seventh and final Bass 'N Bucks 2002 tournament at Cypress Bend Resort on Toledo Bend Lake July 14, 2002. The competition was heavy for this field of anglers and they showed their stuff today bringing in many limits to the scales. The scale limit to take first place constantly being raised as each team came to tally their weight, it was a whopping 24.51 lbs that ultimately took the final lead and won first place. Over $42,000.00 in cash and prizes were awarded including a fully rigged Skeeter SX 190 boat powered by a Yamaha 150.

1st Place - 24.51 lbs - Donnie Billingsley and Larry Stockwell, both of Alexandria, LA blew the field away with their five fish limit. They stayed on the north end of the lake throwing fire tiger DD-22's with their Pro Stick / Shimano / Silverthread combo's. They fished 16' main lake ridges for their catch and was culling by 10:30 in the morning. Their best bite came between 12:30 and 1:30 when the wind laid down.

2nd Place - 20.32 lbs - James Elliott of Shelbyville, TX and Ron Hendricks of Center, TX secured second place overall as well as second place big bass with their kicker weighing in at 6.78 lbs. This team fished with Gene Larew 11" Salty Snakes in a junebug color as well as Gene Larew green pumpkin Baby Hoo Daddy's off of 8-10' secondary points in the mid lake area. They also began culling by 10:30 and said their best bite came between 10:00 & 2:00.

3rd Place - 19.35 lbs - Randy Qualls of Streetman, TX and Mike Metcalf of Center, TX brought in their limit today with crank baits in a shad pattern. Fishing both north and south lake areas, they covered a lot of water while concentrating on brushy main lake points. They had their limit in the boat by 11:00, but their fish really turned on for them around 2:00.

Big Bass - 8.34 lbs - John Gunnels, teamed with Dickie Newberry both from Houston brought in the big bass of the tournament. They caught this Toledo Bend giant on a 10" Texas rigged Lake Fork red bug worm. Their best bite came around 1:00 fishing grass beds in the south lake area.

A total of 66 teams will be fishing the Championship September 14 & 15 on Lake Sam Rayburn. The anglers will be competing for their share in over $85,000.00 in cash and prizes including 3 fully rigged Skeeter / Yamaha bass rigs.
