Winter Time Fishing
By Chris Wilkerson

It is definitely cold outside and everyone is getting cabin fever. Hunting season has come to an end and it is time to start thinking about the spring thaw. t is time to get the family out and head for the winter boat show in Houston, TX. This year promises to be the biggest and best ever. The new Reliant facilities are an amazing sight in itself to see. The new Reliant Hall is a state of the art creation. There is more room and easier access to everything. More boats of all kind from pontoon boot to ski boats, jet skies and the latest models from Ranger bass boats. More tackle from the hottest new baits fresh and saltwater. The new technology of rods and reels will be available for you to try out and see.

For the kids, there will be a designated area where they can see the fish swimming around in a tank as well as have a opportunity to catch one for a prize. They can actually see the fish eat their bait as the water is very clear which is very exciting for the youngsters. The kids will also have a chance to walk around inside the huge boats are on display as well as view the new jet skies and water toys that will catch their eye.

The boat show will start this year on January the 3rd and will run through the 12th with the doors opening up at 12pm and closing at 9 pm. Round your family and friends up and come see me at the boat show. I will be at the Travis Boating Center booth, the Falcon Graphite booth and the Lakecaster booth. I look forward to seeing you there.

The end of January is the beginning of the best fishing for the year. The bass are prestaging for the upcoming spawn which is any fisherman's favorite time of year to fish. From now till April is your best chance to catch a big bass. The bass have moved to the creeks and coves form the main lake and rivers. They will stage up in groups in the channels of creeks and coves. The also will move up to shallower water and feed, then return to the deeper channels and hold there for a while. Of course, this all depends on the water temperatures and water conditions. The warmer the water gets in the shallow areas the longer they will stay before returning to the channels. My best hint is being in the channels especially in January is your best bet.

The best baits for January are the jerk bait, crank bait and spinner baits. The suspending jerk bait is very effective worked real slow on those cold days. The crank bait for the bends in the channels and the spinner baits for the shallow areas. When February arrives the fishing will really heat up and we will move more towards lizards. So, if you can catch good weather days in January, get out and give it a try. You might be rewarded with a wall hanger.
