Father/Son Team Wins Baskin's Wrangler Angler Tournament with 21.86 lbs
By Patty Lenderman

Forty six teams braved cold temps in the 30's to fish the Baskin's Wrangler Angler Tournament at Cypress Bend. As a 100% payback tournament, the anglers were fishing for their share in the $11,400 to be won in 5 overall places and one check for big bass. Ultimately it was the father/son team of George Jeane Sr & Jr who took first place with 21.86 lbs.

The field was divided into two flights, the first due in at 3:00, the second at 3:15. KPBL 1240 AM was there to give live coverage of the weigh in. There were as many new individual anglers who came to fish the Baskin's Circuit as there were total teams. As the anglers began coming to the scales bets were made as to what it would take to win the tournament. Out of the field of 46 teams, 27 limits were brought to the scales which included two big bass over 7 lbs.

1st place - $4,400 - 21.86 lbs - George Jeane Sr & George Jeane Jr of Evans, LA won $3,800 for first place plus another $600 for their 7.31 lb big bass. They used chartreuse/green as well as yellow/black crank baits in 15-20' sloughs for their winning catch as well as carolina rigged watermelon worms. Their best bite came early, having their first limit by 8:30am. Ridges and drop-off areas were where they found their fish holding and they were able to cull a full limit to their final weight.

2nd place - $2,800 - 19.72 lbs - David Truax of Beaumont, TX fished by himself securing second place. His fish were caught on red and crawfish colored rattle traps and crank baits. Off of 10-12' main lake points. Catching all of his fish by 10:30, his two kicker fish of over 5 lbs each came back to back around 10:00.

3rd place - $2,100 - 17.87 lbs - Martin Elshout & Mark Price of Ruston, LA used black/blue jigs with black/blue pork trailers for most of their winning catch. Fishing 11-20' points with brush and stumps, this team had their limit by 11:00 and caught two full limits throughout the day. They also reported catching some of their fish on carolina rigged watermelon lizards.
