Lots of Fun at the 2nd Annual Jasper Youth Trout Derby
By Patty Lenderman

The banks were lined with over 200 kids at the 2nd Annual Jasper Youth Trout Derby, an event put on by Texas Parks and Wildlife on January 11, 2003 at the Jasper City Park . Kids ages 0-16 participated in this free tournament held from 10:00am until noon. The little anglers started in on this chilly morning, temps just in the 30's, at 8:30am. Shouts of "I caught one!" resounded all morning followed by ear to ear grins.

There were three age categories, 0-7 years; 8-11 years and 12-16 years old. There were three prize categories per age group, one for biggest trout, smallest trout and biggest "other species". Many First Fish certificates were issued. Unlike most tournaments, the participants got to keep all of their fish after the tournament. The pond was stocked with 1,325 trout and after the tournament every one was encouraged to come catch these trout at every opportunity.

Winners in the 0-7 years category:
Biggest Trout - 6 yr old Joshua Jones
Smallest Trout - 2 yr old Meagan Moorhead
Biggest "other" species - 6 yr old Austin Britt

Winners in the 8-11 years category:
Biggest Trout - 10 yr old Jane McDonald
Smallest Trout - 11 yr old Jesse Jones
Biggest "other" species - 8 yr old Justin Mays

Winners in the 12-16 years category:
Biggest Trout - 12 yr old Alton Horn
Smallest Trout - 12 yr old Xavier Mays
Biggest "other" species - 12 yr old John Miller

Along with the goodie bags and t-shirts, many door prizes were drawn for and given away like rod & reel combo's, foot balls, basket balls, soccer balls, CD players, and much more. The grand prizes were the boys & girls bicycles won by 7 yr old Elizabeth Ann Francis Kourtney and 2 yr old Jake Vaughn.

It takes a lot of volunteers and donations to make this type of event a success. For the second year in a row the Jasper Evening Lion's club provided hot dogs and drinks for the kids to enjoy. The Jasper Evening Lions Club has been established for 32 years and does so many things for the community through outreach programs. They have a camp for kids with medical problems, the Share The Warmth program provides coats for those who need them. They provide glasses for school kids and the elderly and so much more. If you would like to contact the Jasper Evening Lions Club call Penny Gregrich at 409-384-7586. Local businesses as well as individuals donated money and products that were essential in putting on this great positive event for the kids and families to enjoy.
