21.16 lbs Wins Toledo Bass N Bucks
By Patty Lenderman

2/2/02 - Cypress Bend, LA

Bass N Bucks is filled with top notch highly competitive teams who pull out all the stops and run the gambit when it comes to tournament fishing. Seemingly undaunted by weather conditions or any mechanical mishaps they encounter, this elite group of anglers consistently bring in heavy stringers and big bass. At any of the Bass N Bucks weigh ins you will see that the tallied weights are so tight that it keeps the leader board hopping. For this event alone three teams weighed in bags tipping the scales at over 20 lbs, looking for their share in the over $42,000.00 in cash and prizes to be won in this event. Ultimately it was the team of David Harvey and Kris Wilson who took first place with 21.16 lbs for a grand prize of a brand new beautiful fully rigged Skeeter/Yamaha bass boat & motor.

Twenty five overall places were paid plus three big bass slots. Several big bass over seven pounds were brought to the scales, but the team of Rick Goodman and Chris McMullen brought in the hawg that weighed in at 8.01 for first place big bass.

The tournament day was nice with temps rising to the 60's, winds 10-15 with gusts to 20 mph and mostly cloudy skies. There was another cloud over the tournament. It was the cloud of the catastrophe from the explosion of the space shuttle Columbia the day before. Seven of our astronauts, our hero's, lost their lives in the tragic explosion that scattered debris over 500 miles, much of it landing in our East Texas and Louisiana areas and lakes. While many of the anglers were practicing the day before, they witnessed as debris fell all around them into the lake. Officials asked them to get off of the lake so that pieces of the shuttle could be retrieved and no one was sure if the tournament would go on. Many boat ramps on the Texas side of Toledo Bend were shut down by authorities while they scrambled to retrieve the wreckage. It was decided that the tournament would go on as scheduled, while the search for the pieces continued by air, land and water. At the weigh in at Cypress Bend park a Black Hawk military helicopter flew a grid pattern along the shorelines searching for parts of the shuttle. Prayers for the lost crew, their families and friends continue to be said.
