The Fishers of Men Tournament turned into a hot day of fishing for McBride & Richardson
By Ray Lenderman

It was a hot day of fishing for the 28 teams who came to fish the last regular tournament before the regional qualifier. The morning started off beautiful being a little warm which was just a hint for what was in store for the rest of the day. By mid morning it had turned hot, but it didn't seem to slow the fish down. The anglers reported that the fishing started off good and then stayed good for most of the day. Almost all teams happily reported that they were able to cull, and in some instances cull limits. Summer is definitely here, for most fish caught were on summer patterns. This is proven by Gordon McBride and Don Richardson who won the tournament with 18.18 lbs, including the big bass of the tournament with their 7.61 lbs kicker. They won with almost three pounds to spare over second place.

1st place - $898 - 18.18 lbs - Gordon McBride and Don Richardson were fishing 4 ½' of water off of mid lake points. Filling their limit quickly, they made their first cull at 7:30am. Their fish came off of crank baits and green pumpkin carolina rigged lizards. Their 7.61 lb kicker took first place big bass honors.

2nd place - $515.20 - 15.21 lbs - Larry Shine and Roy Gilmore also weighed in a nice 4.42 lb kicker which took second place big bass honors. Fishing mid lake points and coves, they enjoyed an all day bite. They were able to cull two full limits before the day was done.

3rd place - $358.40 - 12.5 lbs - Eddie Hudson and Russel Stewart had a 5 fish limit, finding their fish on main lake points in less than two foot of water in the buck brush. Their best bite came between 12:00-1:30pm, fishing the Black Forest area.

4th place -$268.80- 12.48 lbs.-Earl Kersh and Jeff Kersh

5th place -$ 201.60- 11.70 lbs.-Greg Malone and Ryan Malone

1st Big Bass - $168 - 7.61 lbs - Don Richardson and Gordon McBride
2nd Big Bass - $112 - 4.42 lbs - Larry Shine and Roy Gilmore
3rd Big Bass - Kistler Rod - 4.16 lbs - Gary Miettinen and Tommy Bankhead

The Fishers of Men Team tournament trail pays one place per five entries at every tournament. This year Bass Pro Shops have come on board as a national sponsor as well as incorporating a new bonus program from Triton boats called "Triton Gold". Every tournament with at least 60 boats participating is eligible for this program for Triton boat owners who have pre-registered at If a registered angler wins first place in an eligible tournament, they will receive an additional $1,000 from Triton. Any angler who wins in a Triton Gold event will be eligible to fish the Triton Elite Tournament to be held in 2004 for a chance to win $100,000.00. This is a brand new program and the information did not, unfortunately, get into the Fishers of Men 2003 brochures.

The participants must fish at least three tournaments to qualify for the championship. Twenty five teams from each division will advance to fish for over $35,000.00 in cash and prizes, including a fully rigged Triton TR-185 bass boat with a 150 HP Mercury motor. The next event for the East Texas division will be the Regional qualifier held June 28th on Toledo Bend Lake, Cypress Bend Park.
