Fishers of Men wraps up their 2003 season
By Ray Lenderman

As with all tournament trails starting to wind down, this was also the case with the Fishers of Men Tournament Trail. This was the last regular tournament of the season. Next is the regional championship tournament which will be held on Ross-Barnette reservoir just outside of Jackson, Mississippi on October 15-16. One of the outstanding things about this particular tournament was that almost all 24 teams that fished made the cut for the regional tournament. The regional championship has a bigger payout and winners will start receiving boats as first place prizes. This tournament was held out of Cypress Bend Park, Toledo Bend Lake on June 28th. The day started out clear with gusty NE winds at 10-15 mph. As the day wore on the temperatures climbed into the mid 90's which made for a very hot and sultry day to be on the water, but that didn't seem to slow down the bass from biting, it was just hard to get the "big bite". The anglers reported that they all had caught numbers of fish, just couldn't seem to get the bigger fish to hit.

1st place went to Dan Hinton and Loran Compton with 14 pounds even. They caught their fish on mid lake grass flats on carolina rigs. Their big bass weighed in at 3.8 lbs and they caught her around 7:30 am. Their first place catch caught them a check for $864.00. Additionally, for being this years total points champions they received another check for $670.00. This team is sponsored by Witt Marine of Baytown, Triton Boats and Mercury Motors.

2nd place team of Danny Lindsey and Jerry Sanders with 11.50 lbs. They fished mid lake areas in 30' depths throwing carolina rigs. Second place paid $480.00. This team is sponsored by Witt Marine, Mercury Motors, Continental Batteries, Triton Boats, Wake Runner Oil and Lindsey's Wrecker Service.

3rd place went to Larry Shine and Roy Gilmore for their 8.70 lb sack. Their check totaled $345.60.

4th place team is John Lewis Sr. and John Lewis Jr with a total weight of 7.71 lbs. Their winnings totaled $230.00

5th place was Mary Morris and Liz Lewis. Their bag weighed in at 7.66 lbs which paid out for them with Continental Trolling Motor batteries.

Big Bass - John Lewis, Sr. weighed in the 3.92 lb bass that caught him a check for $144.00

"It has been a good year with the points champion position changing throughout the year. Dan Hinton and Loran Compton nudged out the rest of the teams to be the points champion for this year which gives them a free ride to the National Championship event. Thank you to all of the teams that have participated in our trail this year. Congratulations to all of the anglers that are advancing to the regional championship. Good luck and God bless" - Duck Wright, Tournament Director.

The participants must fish at least three tournaments to qualify for the championship. Twenty five teams from each division will advance to fish for over $35,000.00 in cash and prizes, including a fully rigged Triton TR-185 bass boat with a 150 HP Mercury motor.
