Allen & Freeman win final Sealy Team event
By Patty Lenderman

July 13, 2003 marked the last tournament event of the season for the Sealy Open Team events for 2003. It was a blistering hot day on Toledo Bend with barely a ripple on the water. It takes almost as much physical agility to withstand all day conditions like this as it does when bad weather hits. Just as we instinctively do, the bass were headed for cooler conditions which meant deep water fishing for these anglers. These were just exactly the conditions that Harold Allen and Glen Freeman specialize in. It paid off for them with a $10,000 first place win.

1st place- 24.35 lbs - $10,000 - Harold Allen & Glen Freeman brought in their catch fishing deep water structure, in 15'-30' depths. Using Bomber crank baits and Reaction worms. "This is our time of year when we do best due to style. The fish are either suspended or on the bottom in deep water this time of year. This type of fishing requires good electronics, a lot of patience and a good feel for the bottom. It is a hard style to master" Harold reported. With Glen's strength in crank baits and Harold's strength in plastics, the combination paid off. Harold is heading to his 14th BassMaster Classic next month. "I fished this tournament as a confidence builder. There's nothing like fishing a good lake with a good partner." When asked how he feels about the upcoming Classic, he stated "I feel good. I've had a few good practice days and feel like I may do well." Good luck Harold. We'll be cheering for you.

2nd place- 21.88 lbs - $4,000 - Charles Andre & Warren Pourciau fished a Texas rigged red bug worm for their catch. They headed to the south end of the lake where they fished grass and brush on secondary deep water points, in about 20' depths. Their best bites were very early and then picked up again after 1:00. They caught eight good keepers throughout the day, culling three to their final bag.

3rd place- 18.72 lbs - $3,000 - James Ausmus & Harry Thomas caught their fish first thing in the morning, not having another bite after 9:00. They used watermelon baby Brush Hogs dipped in chartreuse near Cypress Bend. They found their fish in a main lake creek channel with stumps throwing in 10'-25' depths. They fished that one spot all day and 7:30 was their best bite.

Big Bass - 9.53 lbs - $750 - Willie Fabre & Shannon Price also fished a deep main lake creek and pulled the big bass of the tournament out of it. Throwing Carolina rigged paddle tails in a watermelon red, they caught her around 9:00.

Rounding out this last tournament of the 2003 season were 143 teams. As each team brought their fish to the weigh in at Cypress Bend, many had a nice kicker fish in their bag. Many wives, children and friends of these anglers were at the weigh in anxious to see what they brought in to the scales, excited for the anglers and their catches. It has been an exciting year for these anglers, as many records have been broken. After a record breaking season that kept the pace hopping, the final and total points and pounds were tallied to determine which teams made the mark for the championship. The list of qualifiers are posted on the Sealy website. Congratulations to the Anglers of the Year, James Ausmus and Harry Thomas. They earned this position for being the leaders in the points standings and the reward for this honor is to fish the 2004 season with no entry fees.
