Massey and Read Take Top Honors

The 4th Annual Corps of Engineers Spring Team Bass Tournament took place on Sam Rayburn April 3rd with Dennis Massey and Sammy Read claiming the title of 1st place with 5 fish weighing in at 17.84 pounds. Massey, who is a Powerplant Mechanic at Sam Rayburn Powerplant, also captured the tournament's Big Bass Pot with a 5.50 lb big bass. His partner, Sammy Read who works at the Town Bluff Project Office, said that most of their fish came from Carolina rigging a green pumpkin big dead ringer.

2nd place went to husband and wife team, Ray and Judy Livingston. Ray is a Civil Engineering Technician at the Sam Rayburn Project Office. Their stringer of 5 fish, which brought a total weight of 15.46 pounds, came from sight fishing and flippin' watermelon-red Zoom lizards in the shallows behind the buck brush and in the sweetgum trees

Tom Webb and Donny Webb finished in 3rd place with a total of 5 fish weighing 10.68 pounds, most of which came within the first 15 minutes of the tournament. Their fish were caught on Carolina rigged 4 inch Senko's in watermelon-red. Tom works at the Whitney Lake Powerplant in Central Texas and his brother, Donny, is the high school principal at Hudson ISD in Lufkin, both which are originally from Jasper.

All in all, the day was beautiful. What started out with overcast skies turned into a wonderful sunny day with lots of fish caught. "This is our best year yet with larger stringers and bigger fish being caught. In the past, we have had our tournament in May but this year we opted to fish a month earlier to see if it would improve our catch, and it did for some, and we look forward to coming back to Big Sam next year" said tournament director Tom Webb.
