Get Hooked on Fishing

Mike Halpin, General Manager of Nacogdoches Wal-Mart Super Store, presents a $500 donation to East Texas Get Hooked on Fishing to Paul Hinton, director of the local area anti drug and alcohol abuse program. Wal-Mart Superstore in Nacogdoches kicks off the fund drive for the upcoming Get Hooked on Fishing-Not Drugs Crusade by presenting a $500.00 contribution to Paul Hinton, director and founder of the local area drug and alcohol abuse program. The donation was a joint contribution from Wal-Mart Foundation and Wal-Mart Superstore in Nacogdoches according to Mike Halpin, manager of the Nacogdoches Superstore, who presented the $500.00 check.

Hinton stated that the Nacogdoches Wal-Mart has been one of the major sponsors of East Texas Get Hooked on Fishing for several years and that he is elated that Mr. Halpin has kicked off the fund raising campaign with a $500.00 donation. He stressed that all contributions to East Texas Get Hooked on Fishing are used to fund the local program and that more than $235.00 in fishing related products have been given to area youth since the inception of this program in 1987.

Halpin mentioned that next spring the stores will also be making product donations for the youngsters and/or the Get Hooked on Fishing-Not Drugs auction fund raiser.

Hinton stated that each year in the poster/essay contest students make posters or write essays with the theme Hooked on Fishing -Not Drugs and that the winners in each grade receive rods, reels, tackle boxes, trophies, etc.

More than twenty super clean role models will be in participating schools Friday, May 7, 1999 speaking to students on drug and alcohol abuse, setting goals, and self-esteem and several hundred youngsters will be fishing and attending seminars at Shirley Creek Marina on Lake Sam Rayburn for Fishing Friends and Family Day, Saturday May 8, 1999.

Other East Texas sponsors that contributed $400.00 or more in cash, services, or products in 1997 include Brookshire Brothers (Regional Office) Marilyn Lawson, Angler Printing, StoryWright Office Supply in Lufkin, Texas Foundries, Shirley Creek Marina, Gulf States Toyota of Houston, Fredonia Graphics, Sound Tech, Etoile ISD, Chireno ISD, Nacogdoches Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Texas parks and Wildlife Department, Frame Designs, and Dr. Oglesbee of San Augustine.
