10 Lb Lunkers Top Toledo McSplash
By Ed Snyder

3th Annual LakeToledo Bend McDonald's Big Bass Splash
Ye Olde sayeth of "it's not over till it's over" re-emphasized it's definition as during the final moments of Toledo Bend's McDonalds Big Bass Splash, which had been previously dominated by the 10.25 lb 2nd day catch of Sulphur LA, angler, Darren Youngblood, was suddenly upset by San Augustine TX, angler, Randy Michalec, who managed to catch a late afternoon grass-mat bite that would put a 10.28 lb bass on the weigh-in scale as well an exciting finish on the record books..

Thirteen years of Toledo Bend bass fishing excellence is being reviewed at Cypress Bend Resort and with the 6:am radio broadcast of "anglers start your casting" by KICKS 105/fm, another chaptor in Big Bass History officially started with the Big Bass anglers who had arrived from 14 states to cast their hopes for winning some Big Bass Splash money. This years event drew 1,225 anglers who would compete for the $190,000 in "Gauranteed" cash & prizes which would pay its anglers ten hourly McChecks for the top ten largest bass weighed-in for each of the weigh-in hours of from 7:am thru 3:pm each day. The tournament would also offer an exact weight bonus for a 1999 "fully rigged" $14,900 Triton TR-17/OMC Johnson Bass Boat for any lucky angler who catches & weighs-in a 3.0 bass "per each day" of the tournament for Friday-June 25th, Saturday-June 26th, and Sunday-June 27th, and as the exact weight boats are "guaranteed" to be given away at this tournament, any un-claimed 3.0 boat would be given away "via" a special drawing at the end of the tournament. An elimination drawing will also award the lucky angler who survives Sunday's "lets make a deal drawing" a 1999 "fully rigged" $14,900 Triton TR-17/OMC Johnson Bass Boat, -"AND"- , as a special treat for the attending public, a "FREE" registration and drawing will be held on Sunday-June 27th which will award a $9,000 Summit Pontoon boat & trailer to a "luck-o-the draw" spectator.

"In this event, as in all of our Big Bass Splash events that we've had for these past 15 years, Bob Sealy informs, "our Big Bass anglers have donated a portion of their entry fee's for the benefit of the Ronald McDonald Houses. "Toledo Bend's donation, which will benefit the Ronald McDonald houses of Monroe and New Orleans, amounts to $10,300, Bob announces to a cheering crowd as he hands the check to Leesville McDonald store owners, L.J. & Norma Langolis. "These tournament donations from "you", the Big Bass Splash anglers, "now exceeds "Two & One/Half Million Dollars", Bob proudly announces as a standing crowd pays tribute to the McDonald Big Bass Anglers.

Tournament Re-cap;

(Day-1)-First day anglers managed to weigh-through torrential, flashflooding rains to tally their first day catch of 179 bass weiging 642 lbs. Tracy Delome of Crosby TX, weighed-in an exact weight 3.0 bass during the 9:am to 10:am hour to win a Triton Bass Boat valued at $14,900 and two anglers who fished northlake patterns managed to catch the "big ones" as Scotty Reynolds of Zwollie LA, brought in his "Toledo Tickler" catch of 7.57 lbs and Merryville LA, angler, Roger Dougherty, managed to weigh-in his 7.07 lb "Zoom Worm" lunker.

(Day-2)-Second day anglers enjoyed a welcomed weather change as torrential rains were replaced by "HOT" sunshine and a bigger bass bite as Sulphur LA, angler, Darren Youngblood weighed-in his Strike King spinner bait 10.25 lb "Toledo Lunker"during the 11:am-12:pm hour. The 2nd, of three, exact-weight $14,900 Triton bass boats, would also be awarded as Steven Rhea of DeRidder LA, weighed-in his 3.0 bass caught from the Texas Island area.

(Day-3)-"HOT & HUMID" rulled the final day of competiton as southwesterly winds and rising lake waters kept the catches down-sized, that is until Randy Michalec, of San Augustine TX, struggled in with his last minute Housen Bay grass-mat catch of 10.28 lbs.

"One Ounce Camo Oldham Jig with a Larew "mean-green" craw enticed the bass to hit, announced Randy, as he explained how he was fishing from the deck of his Champion/Mercury while working a Falcon rod & Shimano reel spooled with 60# Spider-Wire within a 15' grass-mat when the Lunker hit. "She gave me quite the battle, informed the East Tx, school teacher, as he handed over the 10.28 lb bass to the Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Program for release back into the lake. Randy would win a "top of the hour" check for $1,000, and as his bass weight held til the final moments of the tournament, he would also be able to claim the "braggin' rights" to the 13th Annual McBass tournament as his 10.28 lb lunker won the "overall" 1st place position for another, $5,000 payday. Mr. Michalec would also receive "TWO" exact image replica trophy mounts for his Toledo lunker catch, one from Sealy Outdoors for winning the event, and another from the Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Program for donating it back to the lake..

Mitch Moran, of Carthage MS, managed to "pop" the bubble for winning the final exact weight $14,900 Triton Bass Boat as the weigh-in scale "locked" on his bass with a 3.0 mark.

"I caught the fish on a watermelon Trick-Worm up in a 1215 area from an 8' grass-patch, stated the nervous angler who further fretted, "Jesus, I just hope my "boat-check" holds out!?- (it did)-

"Mark your calendar's, Bob Sealy announced to the attending crowd of over 4,000, "for June 23, 24, 25, of the year 2000, as Sealy Outdoors will be back to Toledo Bend with the 14th Annual McDonalds Big Bass Splash "and" another $190,000 in "guaranteed" cash & prizes. "AND" mark your calendar's for September 12, 1999, for the first ever Sealy Outdoors/Shimano Big Speckled Trout Tournament to be held on Galveston Bay at Clear Lake, TX. And with that, Bob Sealy drew the ticket for the $9,000 Bennington Pontoon Boat that would be awarded to "must be present to win" ticket holder, Clyde Mathews of San Augustine TX.
