Oldham Jig lands 8.38 Lb "Overall"

Anglers Choice East TX Couples Circuit
July 25, 1999, Frontier Park Marina, Toledo Bend Lake, TX.

"Six Mile and McGee Flats inside grass-lines and Oldham jigs put our winning bass on the scale, stated the Sulphur LA, Couple who had just weighed-in a 5 bass/15.36 lb stringer, which also held an 8.38 lb "kicker" that would hold as the tournaments "Overall" Big bass.

Locked within the grip of its "HOT" summer patterns, Lake Toledo Bend was to become quite the challenge to the 46 teamed Anglers Choice Couples who launched from Frontier Park Marina to run the width and breath of Toledo's 194, 000 acre waterway to fish the 1,200 miles of its Texas & Louisiana shoreline. "Kinda' like lookin' for a needle in a haystack, stated one lady angler as she explained that she and her husband turned north after runnin' the pipeline, and didn't stop til they nosed into the 1215 area. Another couple stated that they headed south after coming out of Carrice Creek, and didn't slow down until they "yawed" into Six Mile Bay. Most teams were to find smooth runs as they navigated through the well marked boating lanes which were cut and bouyed by the Louisiana and Texas Sabine River Authorities, which was considered to be one of "the" most important projects for Toledo Bends lake improvements, "second only" to the massive bass re-stocking projects which have "to date" released over 10 million bass-fry into Toledo waters. And as the teamed couples arrived back at the tournament site for their 3:pm weigh-in, some would be seen holding impromptu "pity parties" as they zeroed out with no bass catches, while others were seen struggling-in with their "needle in the haystack" catches as they managed to thread some good bass digitals into the tally for the top leaderboard marks.

"Our Skeeter/Evinrude managed to get us down there, stated Tom & Beverly Barrett of Sulphur LA, as they informed of how they fished Six Mile Bay and McGee flats 10' inside grass-lines. "We worked our Loomis rods and Shimano reels spooled with 15# Big Game mono and 65# Lynch braid, stated Tom as he told of working 3/4 oz black/blue Oldham Jigs with black/blue Larew craws to catch 2 bass early, and two bass late, with Tom's 8.39 lb big bass hitting on a 9:20 a:m: bite. The Sulphur LA, couple managed to put a 5 bass/15.36 lb weight on the scale for 1st as well as an 8.36 lb "kicker" for taking the "overall" Big bass honor.

"Zoom redbugs and DD-22's helped us, informed Randy & Mindy Smotherman of Shelbyville TX. "We ran our Champion/Mercury "up-lake", explained Randy, telling how they worked Falcon rods and Lew's/Shimano reels spooled with 18# Triple-Fish & 15# P-line, as they fished TX rigged Zoom Magnum red-bug worms and Norman Tennessee shad DD-22's along 1215 area 10' to 12' humps with grassy edges. "We probably caught two limits of bass today, explained Randy, as he told of having a good bite from 7:am til noon, when it just plain "died". Randy & Mindy Smotherman managed to cull up a 5 bass/14.97 lb 2nd place weigh-in which also held the tournaments 2nd big bass catch of 5.51 lbs.
