-Highland Tx, Couple takes "Angler of the Year" Honors-

Anglers Choice East TX Couples Circuit
Sunday, August 15, 1999, Twin Dikes Marina, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX.

"My husband managed to catch our first two keepers first thing this morning, stated the Lady angler who had just weighed-in the 1st place stringer of the day, "But after that we began to work as a team to catch enough bass-weight to win this tournament. The husband and wife team were among the forty one couples who competed for a berth at the upcoming Anglers Choice Couples Championship, scheduled to be held on the Red River in Shreveport/Bosier City LA, on October 13-thru-16, 1999.

In this final tournament event of the season for the East Texas Circuit of the Anglers Choice Couples group, 41 teams signed up to launch into the competitive fishing waters of Lake Sam Rayburn, and with an un-seasonable mid-August cold front manipulating normal "dog-day" bassitudes, the results of their fishing day could be an interesting one as previous triple-digit heat index's had conditioned the bass-bite to late afternoon activities. "And, as the teamed couples maneuvered through the light northerly pleasentries to work their fishing patterns, it proved to be a "tuff" day of bassin' for most as they arrived back at Twin Dikes Marina to post their 3:pm weigh-ins.

"BassCat/Mercury "Tuff", answered Wade Crochet as he began to fill in the details of how he, and wife, Sue, managed to put their winning stringer together. "We mainly used watermelon/red/chartreuce-dipped centipede's, rigged carolina style, Wade informed, adding that they fished mainlake pockets which had 20'-23' guts with scattered stumps and brush along its edges. "Allstar rods and Ambassadeur reels spooled with 15# Trilene Big Game mono helped to put our fish in the boat, stated Sue as she noted that northerly winds really helped them out today as they managed to put a 7 bass bite together for a 5 bass/12.82 lb catch. The Longville La, couple took the 1st place check for $510.

"Needmore Point 5'-8' grasspoints, informed Ronny & Brenda Bates of LaPort, TX. "We managed to run our Skeeter/Yamaha bass-rig to our fishing area early, they stated, further explaining that they used Allstar rods & Quantum reels spooled with Trilene BG-12# mono as they managed to catch 3 bass early, but really had to struggle til a 2:50 pm bite filled their limit for their 5 bass/11.67 lb weigh-in and a 2nd place check of $380.

"Sourgrape wacky worm, bubbled Mary Jane Granger of Lake Charles La, "my husband jeff managed to net it for me as I worked it in with my Castaway rod and Ambassadeur reel spooled with 10# Triple Fish. "The 4.49 lb bass hit at 12:30 pm up in a Buck Bay 10' grass-patch, added Mary Jane, as she collected her "overall" tournament big bass check for $110.

The Anglers of the Year honors were added up from the total point standings of the teams who fished the 1999 tournaments, and as the numbers were added, and re-added, the race for the honored "top-spot" was to be a very close one as only 1.24 pnts would separate the 1999 winners from the runners up position.
