Link to U.S. Forest ServiceSabine National Forest offers a number of recreational sites for fishing, camping, and launching your boat into Toledo Bend Reservoir. Additionally, there are large wilderness areas for "exploration" and primitive camping and hunting. Several other hiking trails in the area offer possibilities for a real workout, or a gentle walk in the woods. State parks and recreation areas offer a range from primitive camping to housekeeping cabins. Find out about them all in this section.

Please Note: Some of the recreation areas on Toledo Bend Lake have gradually succumbed to the effects of insufficient maintenance funds for the Forest Service. In late 1999 the Sabine River Authority of Texas took over general management of the areas connecting to Toledo Bend Reservoir and is currently managing them and making repairs and upgrades to the facilities. Fees, where applicable, may be slightly different than quoted. In the Indian Mounds Recreation Area, for example, a new area has been opened up for primitive camping with NO fee - it is one of the best areas in the site for camping close to the lake. Other planned improvements include a second boat launch at Indian Mounds Recreation Area to make it more convenient to campers to launch boats near the campground portion of the park.

CAUTION: In forest areas, poison ivy, oak, and sumac are present and visitors should know and avoid them. Chiggers (redbugs), mosquitos, and ticks are common in many types of vegetation. While chiggers and mosquitos cause itching discomfort, ticks are dangerous because they may carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or Lyme diseases.

NOTE: In June of 2000 the Sabine River Authority of Texas (SRA-Tx) took over management and maintenance of most of the parks. Since that time they have upgraded the parks and changed the fees and some operations.
