Toledo Bend Lake Association

Latest News on What We're Doing...

October 31, 2008

I would like to inform you that the next General Membership meeting will be Thursday November the 6th at 7:00 PM at the SCOA Building (old Lion's Club Building) on Hwy. 191. This will be our yearly Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the fixings to go with it. There will be a $5.00 per person cover charge at the door to cover the cost of the food, the only thing that we need you to bring are some of those great deserts.

The next Toledo Bend Lake Association board meeting will be held at the El Giro Restaurant at the corner of Hwy. 6 and Hwy.191 on November 18th at 6:00 PM. We have moved this meeting up one week due to the Thanksgiving holidays.

If you missed the annual membership drive / fish fry at Sam Miguel Park Pavilion then you missed out on a great evening. Many thanks go out to the main fry cooks; Dannie Fontenot, Thomas Welch and Mike Davis, what a great job of cooking up fish slabs, french fry’s and hush puppies. I would also like to thank those that helped set up the food line and clean up everything. We had about 100 people show up for the event and we even got a few new members out of the bunch.

Membership Notes:

Keep up the great work in getting new members to join the Toledo Bend Lake Association several new members have joined in the past few months. Welcome to the Association!!!

We are still in search of new members. If you know of any previous members that wish to rejoin the TBLA just have them send us $10.00 for an individual membership, $15.00 for a couple’s membership or $25.00 for a business membership. Ongoing and Future Projects:

There is a bit of a slow down for some of the projects now that we are getting into the fall and winter time of the year, keep checking back for more updates as projects are presented to the board.

The TBLA is helping to fund some repairs to the Blue Lake Landing boat ramp. This facility is located on the Louisiana side of the lake at the end of Hwy. 3229. The SRA of Louisiana is doing some dredging for a new boat ramp that is being installed and there is also some parking lot improvements being done as well. This project will help over crowding for this tiny but well used boat ramp as it is one of the best places to launch for great fishing on the 1215 flats area of the lake. I will post more information on this ongoing project as I get it.

There is always room for more projects and ideas. If you have any worthy project ideas just let us know, we would love to hear from you. Did you know that you can find a TBLA Project Funding Application form right here on this web site? Just download the PDF file and print a copy for yourself, fill out the form and mail it in or bring it to the next Board Meeting or General Membership Meeting. The TBLA board will review the application and let you know if it meets the criteria for approval, it’s just that simple.

All is well on the bass fingerling release that is scheduled for December 13, 2008 at the Cypress Bend boat ramp parking lot. There has been a restructuring of the amount of bags of fingerlings that will be handed out per person; we want to make sure everyone that shows up gets fingerlings. The TBLA board has increased the allocated funds for this annual project from $20,000.00 to $25,000.00 which will get us approximately 4100 more fingerlings to hand out. Let’s hope the price stays about the same per fingerling that was quoted a few months ago when we placed the order.

The Night vision binoculars that the TBLA purchased for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife Law Enforcement officers a few months ago have worked out great. We have fulfilled the final request by purchasing 1 more pair of the binoculars for the Wildlife officers. Sgt. Joe says “it doesn’t matter if its pitch dark outside they can see like it’s daytime with those night vision binoculars”.

More TBLA Information:

The first of the year is fast approaching us and that means that it is time to think about the annual election of Board Members. There are several positions on the board to be filled, if you can fill one of these positions then drop me an email or call Jack Vermeire. If you know of someone that would make a great board member, then with their permission pass their name onto Jack or myself. Ballots will be sent out in the next newsletter so you can mail them back in with your dues in or bring them to the December general meeting on December the 4th at the SCOA Building.

The Sabine Parish Air Rifle Shooting Championship was held on October 4th at the Sabine Parish Fairgrounds with 85 shooters showing up for the competition. There were plenty of volunteers from all over the Parish to help out at this year’s event. A special thanks goes out to Dinah Medine for putting together this year’s event. We wish to thank all of the sponsors of the event, especially Daisy Products for supplying the air rifles.

The TBLA board has been looking for a different meeting place to hold our general membership meetings and our Association functions. The board is going to start after the first of the year to hold the General Membership Meetings at the San Miguel Park in their activities building or as it’s called “The Lodge” as it sits toward the rear of the park. We will post a map and make sure the route is marked through the park to the hall. The board will continue to meet at the El Giro restaurant for its meetings.

The Last Cast:

What a difference a month makes, we go from 90 degree weather to near freezing. The deer hunters are loving this cool down as this will really get the deer active. As far as the fish being active, well that just depends on who you talk to. Several have said that the crappies are already moving around and the bass bite is on one day and off the next. Most of the tournaments have wrapped up for the year but there are a few circuits running a 4 tournament winter trail so you won’t be completely alone out there on the water.

Please make sure that you let someone know you are gong out on the water, where you’re launching, the area of the lake you might be fishing in and what time you will be coming in off the water.
I have seen several new waterproof containers for your cell phone, next time you get to the big city go to some of the bigger outdoor stores like Bass Pro Shops or Academy Sporting Goods and check one out. They are better then a few plastic bags and are not much larger than an eye glass case.

The lake level is dropping to the winter lake level so watch running in some of the shallow boat lanes, those old stumps and snags are getting closer to the surface and they will destroy a lower unit in a heartbeat.

Till next time,

Please send your remarks or information to: ratltrap@valornet.com
